The Benefits of Zen Meditation in Addiction and Recovery
A handbook for addicts and those in recovery, and their families.
Written by Mary Heath for the Zen Group of Western Australia, 1997. Foreword by Ross Bolleter Roshi
Foreword
I warmly recommend Mary Heath's article on The Benefits of Zen Meditation in Addiction and Recovery. It shows a sensitive awareness and understanding of the difficulties that people face when they decide to come off drugs and gives a range of strategies for helping this process, ranging from traditional Zen work with the breath and mindfulness and walking meditation, to her own discoveries. Taken together these provide a kit from which people in recovery can choose. Its presentation is vivid and straightforward making it an illuminating, practical, compassionate guide to the path of recovery. .......... Ross Bolleter
About Zen
Zen practice is about having time for yourself in a special way. When you take time off to go for a walk or have coffee with a friend, this is certainly having time for yourself, and is important. But Zen practice goes beyond that. To find out about the deepest parts, the most secret and difficult parts, the parts where beautiful things lie hidden, you may need special training. One method of training comes down to us from Sakyamuni Buddha, who lived in the sixth century B.C. in Northern India. He taught that although life is basically unsatisfactory and full of pain and suffering, there are still wonderment and joy to be found. To find the wonder you don't have to live a special sort of life by entering a monastery or cutting yourself off from family life and work (although you may do that briefly from time to time). By noticing and attending to what brings unhappiness you can gradually change your way of looking at things. Why do we suffer? This is the sort of reality most people would like to avoid. But when you give yourself time to look into these deep and secret parts, your lifestyle and relationships will start to work better. Then your life will come alive and blossom right where you are.

    Addiction and Recovery
Dear Friend, I thought you might be interested in knowing of our powerful program on substance abuse prevention and treatment. We have developed one of the most powerful intervention mediums on addiction and recovery that exists in an hour format. "Visions" is a powerful play on drug addiction, alcoholism and recovery. The play depicts bottoms from the use and abuse of substances, the "awakening" or realization of the problem and coming into the rooms of a Twelve Step program. "Visions" has reached more than 17,000 people. The "Visions" troupe performs where few actors would ever dare, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, shelters, youth houses and correction centers. The cast and crew set up amidst the cafeterias, beds and conference rooms of treatment centers using the powerful medium of theater to educate about drug/alcohol addiction and show that recovery is possible. In the wake of the play the cast and crew of "Visions" are witnessing men and women, many who are caught in the wake of addiction, weeping after the performances, for they are given a renewed sense of hope. These special performances are usually "closed" to protect the anonymity of the clients. When the opportunity arises and we are able to acquire a large area with a stage for a performance, the clients are bused in from various rehabilitation centers and shelters and treated to a free night of theater, coffee and cake. It is not unusual to bring in four to five hundred people to witness a "Visions" show.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SEX AND LOVE ADDICTION
  • Having few healthy boundaries, we become sexually involved with and/or emotionally attached to people without knowing them. Fearing abandonment and loneliness, we stay in and return to painful, destructive relationships, concealing our dependency needs from ourselves and others, growing more isolated and alienated from friends and loved ones, ourselves, and God. Fearing emotional and/or sexual deprivation, we compulsively pursue and involve ourselves in one relationship after another, sometimes having more than one sexual or emotional liaison at a time. We confuse love with neediness, physical and sexual attraction, pity and/or the need to rescue or be rescued. We feel empty and incomplete when we are alone. Even though we fear intimacy and commitment, we continually search for relationships and sexual contacts. We sexualize stress, guilt, loneliness, anger, shame, fear and envy. We use sex or emotional dependence as substitutes for nurturing, care, and support. We use sex and emotional involvement to manipulate and control others.

What does this ultmately mean?  What many social scientists and mental health practioners dread a merger between moral philosophy and theology and the field of mental health.  Then, perhaps among many other revisions of the DSM, the category of "volitional disorders" can be introduced into the realm of practice and welcomed because it acknowledges that man is not totally free in his personhood.
Conversely, the idea that man can gain freedom and that he is at least somewhat free as a basic feature of his identity will take root and never again be challenged by reasonable persons.

I am a methamphetamine addict. It would be more precise to say, " I was an addict." I quit using September 14, 2001. I am very ashamed of what I did for five years. It has taken its toll on me and millions of others. I was using one to two grams of glass per week intravenously. I am now in an intensive outpatient program. I go to therapy everyday, individual counseling on a weekly basis and medical psychiatric counseling every other week. Meth addiction is very difficult to control and nearly impossible to stop.
Three big factors led to my initial use. These factors are not meant to be excuses because there is no excuse.
One, I had recently been fired from a job I loved. My employer and boss retired. My boss's son inherited the business. The son fired nearly everyone. I took it personally and it hurt my pride and sense of self-worth immensely. I felt worthless.
Two, my wife was going through some severe physical problems that were undetected. She had thyroid and diabetic problems but refused to see a Dr. All I knew was that she deplored any intimacy, made excuses for not having any sex, gained weight and lied to me. I thought she was getting ready to leave me. By this time, I'm feeling defeated.

T his Web site was launched in early 1995, and was amongst the first sites dedicated to, not only providing alternative theories of addictive behavior and change, but providing addiction information in general. HabitSmart has been alive and kicking since its debut, despite occasional objections to its non-twelve step focus, and primarily because of the hundreds of positive responses to the site. The site offers an abundance of information about addictive behavior: theories of habit endurance and habit change as well as tips for effectively managing problematic habitual behavior. Many people grappling with addictive behavior are not aware that, as opposed to just one, there are many potentially effective routes to change. In as much as AA and associated 12-step approaches have been useful to many, one size does not fit all. Furthermore, many who align themselves with the 12-step model can augment their recovery with other information and tools.

The Self Scoring Alcohol Check-up is an on-line questionnaire for people concerned about their alcohol consumption. It is hoped that filling out the form will enable respondents to examine important aspects of this behavior and consider various change options. This is not a diagnostic assessment, but an opportunity to examine "the facts" about your drinking (e.g. quantity consumed, unique triggers, consequences) and hopefully find some route to change which is commensurate with your needs and goals Includes the
