Every year the National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities (NICHCY) receives thousands of requests for information about the education and special needs of children and youth with Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADHD, ADD/ADHD). Over the past several years, ADD or A.D.D. (ADHD, ADD/ADHD) has received a tremendous amount of attention from parents, professionals, and policymakers across the country - so much so, in fact, that nearly everyone has now heard about ADD or A.D.D..
While helpful to those challenged by this disability, such widespread recognition creates the possibility of improper diagnostic practice and inappropriate treatment. Now, more than ever, parents who suspect their child might have ADHD (A.D.D., ADD/ADHD, ADD-ADHD, A.D.D.) and parents of children diagnosed with the disorder need to evaluate information, products, and practitioners carefully.
This NICHCY Briefing Paper is intended to serve as a guide to help parents and educators know what ADHD (A.D.D., ADD/ADHD, ADD-ADHD, A.D.D.) is, what to look for, and what to do. While acknowledging that adults, too, can have ADHD (ADD/ADHD, ADD-ADHD, A.D.D.), this paper focuses on the disorder as it relates to children and youth.

Excessive TV viewing at a young age may play a role in ADD If you found this site while doing a web search for information on ADD or ADHD, this perhaps surprising source may prove helpful. LimiTV does not have a medical answer for you, so be sure to discuss the following information with your child's doctor if medical treatment or medication has been recommended for your child. But, we do have some suggestions. We believe there's enough research to suggest that eliminating or minimizing TV viewing by children under five will lessen the chance he or she will develop ADD or ADHD. Research findings on attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) can, of course, be found in the medical literature. But a companion line of research exists outside this strictly medical community. This work, extending back over decades, finds that the frenetic pace of television, the rapidly-changing sound and images, may overwhelm the nervous system of some young children and lead to hyperactive behavior and attention deficits.

What Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - ADD or ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder , often called ADD or ADHD , is a diagnostic label that we give to children and adults who have significant problems in four main areas of their lives:
  • Inattention, Impulsivity, Hyperactivity, Boredom.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurologically based disorder.
This position has become controversial as many would like to dismiss the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder altogether saying that there is no evidence of neurological differences, or that there are no medical tests to diagnose

Introduction Welcome to ADHDSOS : AD/HD Coaching AD/HD Coaching has recently received a great deal of attention. The simple reason for that is that it works! An estimated 17-20 million American's quality of life is hampered by AD/HD. This does not take into account the countless people's lives impacted by the individual diagnosed with AD/HD. I use the coaching process to assist those mentioned above to understand their complex nature of their own AD/HD. I help people understand the "how and why" of their procrastination and inability to only apply themselves to their potential. Coaching is a process of identifying their strengths. Or as my coach and trainer David Giwerc, Master Certified Coach says "gives people with AD/HD who have experienced setbacks or failures permission to proceed."

Primary Schoolers ADD Or ADHD Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • ADHD is generally considered to be a neurochemical disorder with behavioural manifestations It's now understood children have two main problems
    • inattention - not paying attention impulsiveness - doing things without thinking.
It affects about one in 20 children and boys are more likely to have it than girls. We all have times when we don't 'hear' people around us or don't pay attention. We might be reading a great book, watching an exciting game on TV or thinking about a problem. Children might not hear because they are distracted by lights, sounds and things around them. They are curious. They want to investigate. Other children may be worried about something, depressed or sad. Some children have more of a problem. They do silly, dangerous things, can't sit still or concentrate on anything for more than a minute. Their brains actually work in a different way. They may not be able to filter sounds or sights or smells and but are aware of everything around them.

ADD of ADHD?

  • AD/HD is a common childhood behavioral disorder. AD/HD stands for Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder. It is better known as either ADD or ADHD. The slash before the H in AD/HD is used because not all children with the disorder are hyperactive. AD/HD includes three subtypes: inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. The combined subtype is the most common. AD/HD is not a learning disability.
What causes AD/HD?
  • At this time, we don't know what causes AD/HD. AD/HD may be passed down from parent to child through genes. It may be caused by parts of the brain responsible for attention and movement. A child's surroundings also may contribute to his problems.
