Welcome to the ADD News For Christian Families home page. ADD News was the first publication written by Christians for Christians, and devoted entirely to Attention Deficit Disorder and related topics. In each issue we provided our readers with current news and information about attention deficit disorders. We analyzed books, articles and research findings, then presented what we considered the most useful information in a single, easy to read newsletter, all from a Christian perspective. In addition to news and feature articles, we presented reviews of books, audio and video tapes, as well as other resources on the subject of ADD/ADHD. And, we encouraged our readers to write and share experiences with ADD in their own families. In 1999 lack of time and financial resources forced us to suspend publication of the newsletter.

NewIdeas.Net ADD ADHD: Reticular Activating System Neurological Issues with ADD/ADHD Discussed What is happening in the brain to cause this problem that we call ADD? The most recent models which attempt to describe what is happening in the brains of people with ADD suggest that several areas of the brain may be affected by the disorder. They include the frontal lobes , the inhibitory mechanismsof the cortex , the limbic system , and the reticular activating system . Each of these areas of the brain are associated with various functions. The Frontal Lobes The frontal lobes help us to pay attention to tasks, focus concentration, make good decisions, plan ahead, learn and remember what we have learned, and behave appropriately for the situation. Inhibitory Mechanisms The inhibitory mechanisms of the cortex keep us from being hyperactive, from saying things out of turn, and from getting mad at inappropriate times, for examples. They help us to “inhibit” our behaviors. I’ve heard it said that 70% of the brain is there to inhibit the other 30% of the brain. When the inhibitory mechanisms of the brain aren’t working as hard as they ought to, then we can see results of what are sometimes called “disinhibition disorders” such as impulsive behaviors, quick temper, poor decision making, hyperactivity, and so on.

Redaktion: Dipl.-Psych.
Tips for the Teacher
Consistency is the key to helping ADHD children. They are really poor at dealing with change, even if it is positive change. They need to have a sense of external structure, as they tend to lack a sense of internal structure. 2. ADHD kids have two kinds of time...plenty and none . They are usually poor at organizing their time and need you to help them break tasks down into small components. 3. Placing ADHD kids at the front of the room ( nearest the blackboard or where the teacher gives instruction ) is often helpful. If the child is right handed, placing them at the right front of the class minimizes the number of children they watch wiggle when they write. 4. Try to avoid placing ADHD children in loft classrooms or in situations with multiple children at a single desk. This maximizes their distractability. 5. Use colors and shapes to help them organize. 6. Try to provide a quiet study area, free from distraction , when seat work is required. 7. Try to work within the child's attention span . Keep changing the type of work frequently and the child can continue to work productively. Medication is NOT the only solution. 8.Remember

WHAT A.D.D. IS
Attention Deficit Disorder is a collection of traits that reflect the child's inborn, neurologically based temperament. The four main qualities that define A.D.D. are selective attention, distractibility, impulsivity, and in many children, hyperactivity (A.D.H.D.). A portrait of a child with A.D.D. The tag "A.D.D." is not a judgment as to whether a child is good or bad. It is just a term to describe how he thinks or acts. While we feel it's important to look at the positive side as well as the negative aspects of A.D.D., it must be said that growing up with A.D.D. poses a lot of challenges for the child and the family. Understanding what makes your child behave in a certain way will help you meet these challenges. His report card said, "More effort needed." His parents felt he was fooling around at school and tried taking privileges away to punish him. Johnny had been examined by the family doctor and tested by a special education teacher and neither one found a problem with his attention span in these one-on-one situations. His parents felt Johnny was the brightest of their four children by far, but he was failing the third grade! "He's just so creative." they said. From nowhere he comes out with these fantastic ideas! When he gets into inventing something, his energy seems endless, but he won't stick to any of his school assignments unless we really sit on him. When he's working on something that is not his own creation, he is a real scatterbrain. He irritates his teacher because he says the first thing that comes into his mind. He jumps from one idea to the next. He just doesn't think things through."

Abstract Many people have difficulty comprehending that a child can be gifted and also have learning disabilities. As a result, children with special needs that result from both their high abilities and their learning problems are rarely identified and are often poorly served. This article explores the current policies and practices with regard to defining, identifying, and educating this population. Recommendations are included that would help ensure that students who are gifted and have learning disabilities receive the intervention needed to help them achieve their full potential. When educators first began describing children who showed evidence of having a learning disability (LD) yet also appeared to be gifted, many viewed this as contradictory. The stereotype that had prevailed since Terman's (1925) time was that gifted children score uniformly high on intelligence tests and perform well in school. How could a child be considered gifted who has serious enough learning problems to be characterized as having a learning disability? In recent years, the concept of giftedness and learning disabilities occurring concomitantly in the same individual has become commonly accepted. Several books have been written on the subject, numerous articles have appeared in journals, and most educational conferences focusing on either learning disabilities or giftedness include at least one presentation on the dual exceptionality. We appear to have reached an understanding that high ability and learning problems can both be present in the same individual. Nonetheless, empirical research on the characteristics and needs of this population has been limited, and relatively few students with LD who are gifted are identified as such or given special services. In this review, we examine some of the theoretical arguments, regulations, and educational practices that affect students with LD who are gifted.

What is ADD/ADHD? ADD is a diagnosis from a doctor. It stands for Attention Deficit Disorder. When deciding if a person has ADD, the doctor looks to see if the person has certain behaviors most of the time. What are these behaviors? Inattention - is when a person has a hard time paying attention, especially when something is boring or there are a lot of details to remember. Many times the person doesn’t seem to listen when spoken to and has a hard time following directions. Also, the person might seem forgetful and loose a lot of things. Hyperactivity - means that the person has extra energy. The person might be squirmy, fidgety, talkative - they just can’t sit still. Sometimes there is even more energy and it looks like the person is running on a battery that just doesn’t wear out. Impulsivity - happens when a person doesn’t stop to think before an action. Examples are blurting out answers in class, not waiting for your turn, or interrupting when other people are speaking. How does learning about ADD help?
