Surviving ADD in the Workplace
One of the major complaints of adults with ADD is the many different jobs they have held during their lives and their inability to stay in one job for a long period of time. While others may say this is an indication of immaturity or irresponsibility, it may be the result of not having the proper accomodations at work or not creating situations in which you can succeed. This week's newsletter looks at surviving ADD in the workplace and succeeding in spite and sometimes because of ADD.

25. ADD & ADHD Research - Search For The Origin
If you could find the origin of add and adhd, would you? What about the cure? In my opinion add and adhd look like variants of ordinary adrenal fatigue.
http://www.freewebs.com/addresearch/
If you could find the origin of ADD and ADHD, would you? What about the cure? Well, I want you to know I asked that very question back in high school, so I set out to find the origin of this mysterious illness and the possible cure. To me the job was personal, because back in high school I discovered I, myself, had ADD. My psychologist told me I had a "classic" case of ADD with major concentration difficulties and attention problems. Doctors told me there was no cure but said Ritalin would help. That caused even more problems. Next, I tried an amphetamine, and boy do I regret that. Stimulants gave me little else then an energy boost. Drugs were not going to help.
So I started a long journey toward a particular goal, that is, to find the root, or the origin, of my ADD and from that origin produce the cure. It was a very ambitious goal for a high schooler who scored high in English but almost failed biology. But I had read a biography of Bill Lear who is known to have invented the car radio and developed radar. He was a very ambitious man like myself but unlearned and self taught. I knew I, too, could be like him and discover something great. I just had to teach myself.
Soon I found I excelled at doing research. I could read a book or article and pull out countless facts that when added together answered the enigmas of my mind. When the Internet became popular I was on that too, researching whatever I liked and pulling up provocative scientific information. Research was my specialty, and when I almost dropped out of college because of low grades, due to health problems, research became my life.

ADD and ADHD: An Overview for School Counselors. ERIC Digest. by Pledge, Deanna S. INTRODUCTION School counselors are often consultants for parents and teachers on problems that children and adolescents face. Attention deficit is one such problem. It is frequently misunderstood, presenting a challenge for parents and teachers alike. The counselor is a resource for initial identification and interventions at home and in the classroom. The counselor must have at least a working knowledge of typical symptoms and likely responses to environmental demands in order to be an effective resource on attention deficit. ETIOLOGY Attention Deficit Disorder without Hyperactivity (ADD) or with Hyperactivity (ADHD) continues to be a misunderstood diagnosis by many. Some parents and teachers still hold a perception that the label simply provides an excuse for disruptive behavior; however, studies continue to support a biochemical or organic basis to the disorder. Presentation of symptoms can be affected by family interactions, school expectations, and other demands placed on the individual child. Part of the reason that attention deficit is usually diagnosed in school age children (e.g., first to third grade) is attributable to the demands placed on the child when beginning school (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000). The structure at school differs from that in the home or preschool environment.

by Katherine West I believe that teachers have the ability to inspire our children even more than we do as parents do. For the simple reason that they are teaching them, creating the foundation on which they will build their academic careers and life's work. Statistics support this fact. In a popular psychological study, teachers were told that a child would struggle and have problems learning. That child did fail. Then teachers were told that this other student was very bright and that he or she had what it took to be a good student. This child succeeded. Both of the aforementioned children were of equal intelligence- an average I.Q. What does this tell us? This tells me that if a teacher expects a child to succeed then they will. My favorite teacher of all time was my English teacher in high school. She was one of the strictest teachers that I ever had. She accepted nothing less than excellence. I have found that if a teacher challenges us, we often rise to the occasion. Mrs. Brenda Neal was the person whom I can thank for my appreciation of the written word. She unveiled literary treasures, inspiring me to take pleasure in reading beautiful works of art. By exposing me to the works of Shakespeare, Dickens, and Homer, she introduced me to vibrant characters that resided in whimsical, far-off places. She brought the works to life in her classroom. No, they didn't sit in those old dusty books.

Finding solutions that offer hope and confidence These days everyone seems to be talking about Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). If you haven’t heard about it at school, from a family member or had personal experience, you’ve probably read about it or seen it on TV. In this document you will find out what you can do about it. The therapy offered at the Mozart Center, while not a cure, can go a long way to help people with ADD or ADHD. All programs are individually tailored to get the best possible results. Trying to Unravel the Controversies about ADD and ADHD A review of the scientific literature shows that ADD is a hotly debated topic. Some experts go as far as saying that the ADD syndrome lacks supportive evidence and should be clinically discarded (G. Coles, L. Fleisher and P. Breggin). Others believe that ADD is a neurological syndrome whose cause might be genetic (Hallowell and Ratey). However, they admit " the exact mechanism underlying ADD remains unknown. There is no single lesion of the brain, no single neurotransmitter system, no single gene we have identified that triggers ADD

What is the Difference between ADD and ADHD?
Write a question Info
Top Discuss this Ask an expert Print Question(s): Written by: Martin Winkler First version: 19 Aug 2003. Latest revision: 17 Oct 2003. What is the difference between ADD and ADHD? Answer: During the last few years many different terms for children, adolescents and adults with ADHD have been introduced. They were mainly influenced by American descriptions of the classification system DSM-IV:
  • ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)
is the term used in the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) diagnostic criteria.
  • ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) with or without hyperactivity
is the older term from the DSM-IIIR. So in some older literature you will find this term as a synonym for ADHD. Thomas Brown describes common symptoms of ADD (inattentive type):
    • Often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli Often difficulty following through on instructions from others
    • Difficulty sustaining attention
    • Often does not seem to listen to what is being said
    • Tendency to lose things necessary for tasks or activities
    • Difficulty organising goal-directed activities
    • Often shifts from one uncompleted activity to another
Some research shows that children with hyperactive-impulsive symptoms tend to have more behavioural problems and conduct disorder, while children with the inattentive type (ADD) have a higher risk of comorbid depression or anxiety disorders.

ADD (or attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) are two of the most common disorders associated with Tourette Syndrome. Obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD, is also experienced by many children and adults who have Tourette Syndrome. Combined, Tourette Syndrome, ADHD (or ADD) and OCD are commonly referred to by neurologists as the Tourette Trifecta.

    The Positive Side of ADD
    by Katherine West
September 18, 2000 Why is it that so many teachers only remember or concentrate on the negative problems that ADD/ADHD kids have? Why do they always seem to recall that many have non-compliant behavior? Whether you are a teacher or a parent of an ADD/ADHD student, please take the time to learn the positive effects of this disorder also. Yes, it is true that many kids with ADD/ADHD are more prone to problems in school. Yes, it is also true that they sometimes are very destructive to themselves and others through their actions. Yes, it is true and sad that these kids have a much higher incidence of teenage pregnancy. Sadly, many of the kids get in trouble with the law. Too many fall victim to depression. Tragically, many of these kids commit suicide. The facts and statistics all show that these kids can be troubled, but they also illuminate just how much promise that these children have. The possibilities are limitless for the successes that these kids are capable of achieving. Perhaps much of the reason for these negative consequences that children must endure is not simply from their behavior choices and impulsivity, but also a result of the way in which they are treated both by their peers and teachers. So many teachers talk down to these students. Not all, but some of them are unwilling to believe that they can succeed. Many even have preconceived notions of how they will act. This is not just on the basis of what they have seen, but simply because they have been diagnosed with ADD.

    I. What is ADD?
Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD - ADHD, the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder of childhood (National Institute of Health) is estimated to affect 3 to 5 percent of school-aged children. Dr. Russell Barkley, Director of Psychology and Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at the University of Massachusetts, a leading author, researcher, and diagnostician in the treatment of ADD has said: "ADHD is real, a real disorder, a real problem, often a real obstacle. It can be heartbreaking and nerve-wracking". As anyone who suffers from ADD, and anyone who cares for someone with ADD can attest, Dr. Barkley correctly states the emotional toll that this disorder can take. All aspects of daily living and family life are touched when a family member is affected with ADD. In this section we will provide information on how to identify ADD, how ADD is treated, the societal implications of ADD, methods and procedures to deal with the same, some common misconceptions of ADD, and we will provide resources for getting support and help. On its most basic level, Attention Deficit Disorder or ADD consists of the symptoms of poor attention span and impulsive behavior. Hyperactivity may or may not be present. Is ADD treatable? The answer is "yes". Is ADD curable? At this present time, there is no cure for ADD.

    36. Preventing Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) And ADHD By Dr. Lorraine Day
The following steps are ways to help prevent add and adhd and to reverse the factors that cause them 1) Change the child s diet to all natural whole foods.
    http://www.drday.com/attentiondeficit.htm

    Attention Deficit Disorder
    by Lorraine Day, M.D.
A child is given the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), also called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) when he is considered overactive, cannot pay attention and cannot sit still, ALL VERY subjective symptoms. ADD is diagnosed four times more frequently in boys because boys mature more slowly than girls and because boys are put in classes at school with girls of the same age, so the boys, being less mature, appear to be hyperactive. Irritability anger and mental confusion may also be present so these children are then labeled as having a "Learning Disability." However, these symptoms are virtually identical to the symptoms of hypoglycemia, low blood sugar which is caused by the up and down swings of insulin resulting from eating too much refined sugar.
Attention Deficit Disorder and Ritalin have become almost synonymous. Up to 90% of children who are first diagnosed with ADD receive a prescription for Ritalin. At least a dozen other drugs are prescribed for these symptoms as well. There has been a 500% increase in the use of Ritalin alone since 1991. Short- term use of these medications is associated with a 70 to 80% improvement in symptoms. So naturally, it appears that the drugs have solved the problem. However, these studies don't show the entire picture. Very few long-term studies have been done evaluating the success of amphetamine-type medication such as Ritalin, for ADD symptoms, and the few studies that do exist do not present a very encouraging picture. For years, it was thought that children outgrew symptoms of ADD so they were treated with drugs, until they "outgrew" the condition.

    Learning Difficulties and Diet
I have long been aware of the importance of diet and good health. I was first made aware of this connection in the writings of Linus Pauling and his theory of a high vitamin C intake in promoting good health. There is a growing belief that children with learning difficulties can benefit from dietary changes. I was sceptical of these claims, but more recently while watching a film, a drama documentary, called ‘Lorenzo’s Oil’ I realised that there might be truth in this assertion. The film made me aware of the importance of diet to facilitate cognitive development and its healthy functioning. The question which occurred to me was that the intake of vitamins and minerals is a variable factor in an individual's diet. For most of us the recommended daily intake is sufficient for our needs. It may be that some people such as LD pupils might need more than is commonly thought essential. Maybe the food they eat only gives them the dosage dieticians believe is necessary but they may need more than this. Fish may be a food they need to eat more of.

Most of us have experience with children in our Scouting programmes who have one form or another of Attention Deficit Disorder or another challenge that impedes learning ability or leads to inattentiveness and disruptive behaviour. While there are a few Leaders who know how to work with people who have these sorts of problems effectively, they are few and far between. Although nearly every one of us will have occasion to work with children or other adults who are affected by ADD or a learning disability, these topics are either covered inadequately or not at all in our Scout Leader training courses.
Many of these very real developmental disorders are "invisible" to others, beyond the behaviour or learning performance difficulties that result from them. Since we cannot see the disorder, there is a temptation to dismiss it as intentional disruptiveness or an unwillingness to learn the skill or task we assign to the Scout.
Of course, on the other side of the coin, some children who have such disorders may, on occasion, "use" their "problem" to get out of doing things they prefer not to do. It can be hard to discern the difference between the actual situation and how it may or may not be used...
That said, the large majority of children with these disorders are above-average in intelligence, and are

Tuesday, April 20, 2004 By Kelley Beaucar Vlahos attention deficit disorder search OAS_AD('Middle'); University of Southern California search attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder search "Cannabinoids are a very viable alternative to treating adolescents with ADD and ADHD," she told Foxnews.com. "I have a lot of adult patients who swear by it." But not everyone is so high on the idea of pot for students with neurological illnesses. Subcommittee Chairman Mark Souder, R-Ind., who invited Jensen to testify after reading about her ideas in the newspaper, was hardly convinced by her testimony. "My work with cannabis patients is certainly not definitive at this point, but it strongly suggests that the precepts upon which cannabis prohibition have been based are completely spurious," O'Connell said. Worse yet, he added, the prohibition has successfully kept certain adolescents away from pot who now turn to tobacco and alcohol instead. Jensen, who said she believes Souder invited her to testify to "humiliate me and incriminate me in some way," suggested that a growing body of evidence is being developed to back medical marijuana chiefly for chronic pain and nausea. She said it is difficult, however, for advocates like herself to get the funding and permission to conduct government-recognized tests on ADD/ADHD patients. "Unfortunately, no pharmaceutical companies are motivated to spend the money on research, and the United States government has a monopoly on the available marijuana and research permits," she told Congress.
