Biology Dictionary Definition:
  • A rare disease in which the body's immune system attacks the nerves of the peripheral nervous system , damaging the protective myelin sheaths surrounding the nerves and sometimes damaging the nerve axons . Symptoms have a range of severity and can include abnormal sensations (such as numbness, pins and needles, vibrations, etc.), muscle weaknesses (due to the destruction of the nerves which carry signals to the affected muscles), aches and pains, and paralysis. The cause of Guillain-Barre Syndrome is unknown; often it is triggered by a virus infection (like hepatitis mononucleosis , etc.). The disease occurs in both sexes and at any age. Treatment for the disease consists of treating the different symptoms as they arise and rehabilitation. Most patients (around 90%) recover without serious long-term disabilities between six months and two years after the syndrome begins. The 1-5% death rate is usually due to respiratory or cardiovascular complications. For more information, visit

It is related to inflammation of multiple nerves. Causes and Risks Guillain-Barre syndrome is an acute type of nerve inflammation. The inflammation damages portions of the nerve cell, resulting in muscle weakness or paralysis . The damage usually includes loss of the myelin sheath of the nerve demyelination ) ,which slows conduction of impulses through the nerve. The damage may also include destruction of the axon part of the nerve cell (denervation), which blocks conduction through the nerve.

Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with Guillain-Barre syndrome is indexed in search engines, such as www.google.com or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so.

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a disorder caused by nerve inflammation involving progressive muscle weakness or paralysis , which often follows an infectious illness.
    Causes and Risk
Guillain-Barre syndrome is an acute type of nerve inflammation. The inflammation damages portions of the nerve cell, resulting in muscle weakness or paralysis and sensory loss. The damage usually includes loss of the myelin sheath of the nerve (demyelination ), which slows the conduction of impulses through the nerve. The damage can also cause denervation (kill the axon part of the nerve cell), which stops nerve function entirely. Without the axon, messages cannot be transferred from one nerve cell to another.
The exact cause of this disorder is unknown. It may occur at any age but is most common in people of both sexes between the ages 30 and 50. It often follows a minor infection, usually a

    GENERAL INFORMATION
    DESCRIPTION
Guillain-Barrqe syndrome is an inflammatory condition of nerves and muscles that causes rapid weakness and loss of sensation. The central nervous systemincluding the brain, the coverings of the brain (meninges), and the spinal cord and peripheral nerves and muscles are involved. Guillain-Barrqe syndrome can affect both sexes, all ages, but occurs far more commonly in adults than children.
    Appropriate health care includes:
  • Physician's monitoring of general condition and medications.
  • Hospitalization.
  • Self-care after diagnosis.
    Early stages:
  • Muscle weakness in hands and feet, arms and legs, abdomen and chest. The weakness spreads within 72 hours; it may create life-threatening breathing difficulty for your child.
  • Shock (weakness, faintness, cold hands and feet, rapid heartbeat, sweating). Later stages:

    Autoimmune disorder
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition An autoimmune disorder arises from an overactive immune response The immune system of a multicellular organism has several functions. It acts primarily as a defense against foreign pathogens (such as viruses, bacteria, parasites), and some poisons. It also functions in the return of extracellular fluid to the blood, and the formation of white blood cells. There are several variations of immune systems throughout species, and sometimes more than one immune system within the same organism (for example, the human brain has its own immune system that is separate from the "normal" one).

The causes of autoimmune disorders are still obscure, and most of these disorders are probably the result of multiple circumstances: for example, a genetic predisposition triggered by an infection. Women tend to be affected more often by autoimmune disorders, nearly 79% of autoimmune disease patients in the USA are women

André Strohl Description: The commonest form of acquired neuropathy affecting both sexes, most frequently affecting young adults and believed to be a form of autoimmune disease with a delayed hypersensitivity reaction. Commences with progressive muscular weakness of extremities that may lead to paralysis. It spreads rapidly, ascending to involve the cranial nerves. Commences distally but spreads proximally and may involve the bulbar region and the diaphragm. Clinical features are pain in the back and the legs and weakness beginning in the feet and legs and progressing upwards. The respiratory muscles are affected in about half the cases, and this puts the patient in danger. The tendon reflexes are lost.
