ACHILLES TENDONITIS For more Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Information Check out EMEDx.com Definition Inflammation of the tendon behind the ankle that connects the leg and ankle to the heel bone Details The achilles tendon is a strong band of tissue that is the continuation of the large calf muscles. It serves as the power source for pushing off with the foot. Long standing achilles tendonitis (inflammation) can lead to tendonosis which is a degeneration of the tendon fibers. Causes Excessive running or jumping especially without proper stretching and strengthening are the most common causes of achilles tendonitis. Uphill running in particular can cause this condition. Diagnosis Achilles tendonitis is diagnosed by a history of pain behind the ankle when engaging in running or jumping. It is confirmed by tenderness over the achilles tendon and weakness when testing the calf muscles. Treatment Nonoperative: Most cases of achilles tendonitis can be treated without surgery. Rest, antiinflammatory medications and stretching are the initial nonoperative measures. Physical therapy in combination with orthotics (shoe inserts) may also be needed.
Operative: Patients with severe tendonosis unresponsive to conservative treatment may need surgery. The surgery consists of removing the degenerated portions of the tendon followed by an aggressive post operative rehabilitation program.

by Stephen M. Pribut, DPM Symptoms and Causes: the biggest contributor to chronic achilles tendonitis is ignoring pain Achilles tendonitis is the bane of many runners. You should not allow this to turn into a chronic and troubling malady leading to moans about how it will never end, contributing to roadsides strewn with air cushioned clad runners all wh ice packs attached to their heels. First, we will review some basic information about the achilles tendon. The achilles tendon is the connection between the heel and the most powerful muscle group in the body. This has long been known as a site prone to disabling injury. Forces up to 12 times body weight (9kN) may arise during sprinting. This tendon is named after Achilles, who according to myth was protected from wounds by being dipped in a magical pond by his mother. She held him by the heel, which was not immersed, and later died by an arrow wound in his heel. Although obviously, injuries to this area must have been known for more than 2,000 years, it was first reported in the medical literature by Ambroise Paré only 400 years ago.

ACHILLES PAIN INTRODUCTION TO ACHILLES PAIN Achilles tendonitis is a painful condition that can cause pain with every step you take. As the name suggests achilles tendonitis affects the achilles tendon. The achilles tendon connects the heel of the foot to the calve muscles. Symptoms include pain which may be present at the achilles tendon during activity and may also increase once activity has ceased. Tenderness can usually be felt along the course of the tendon and in some cases there may be the presence of a localized nodule (small sack of fluid) on the tendon. Another sign to look for is that the soles of shoes tend to wear out quickly around the heel region.

The most common cause is overuse. Tendinitis is common walkers, runners, and athletes who do a lot of jumping and running. Arthritis located around the heel can cause Achilles tendinitis. This occurs because when extra bony growths develop around joints, the tendon can become inflamed and painful. Symptoms? Some of the most common symptoms are:

ACHILLES TENDINOSIS (AT) Achilles tendinosis = "the bane of many runners"-especially true for the older athlete! T he term "Achilles tendinitis" is a misnomer. "itis" means inflammation. There is no inflammation of the tendon! The correct name is Achilles tendinosis. So, if you are taking NSAID's for the inflammation, you might want to switch to acetaminophen which will be easier on your stomach. The following ABSTRACT is from the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Last fall, I had to stop running completely becasue of the pain in my left Achilles. Ask the Doctor
Q: Achilles tendon inflammation Help! I'm in agony from what my running coach says is inflammation of my Achilles tendon. How should I be treating it, and what can I do to stop it happening again? Martin Dr Trisha Macnair responds Inflammation of the Achilles tendon is very common among sportsmen and women, whether amateur or professional. The Achilles tendon is a large thick tendon which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone (it's named after the Greek God Achilles, who according to mythology, was vulnerable only at his heel). You can feel your Achilles tendon at the back of your ankle - it is the thick springy tissue just above the heel. Although the Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body and can withstand immense force, it is surprisingly vulnerable. It is the most frequently ruptured tendon in the body (runners and jumpers particularly fear a ruptured Achilles tendon, which feels like a very painful sudden kick in the back of the ankle and needs urgent repair). Inflammation of the tendon, or Achilles tendonitis, is more common though. Symptoms and treatment There are several conditions which can cause similar symptoms, such as inflammation of a heel bursae (or fluid sac) or a partial tear of the tendon. You should see your doctor to confirm what is causing your symptoms.

By Dr. Brian Abelson DC. Calgary, Alberta, Canada
In this article… Injuries to the Achilles Tendon About the Achilles Tendon Causes of Achilles Tendon Injuries Always Consider the Kinetic Chain ... Finding an ART Practitioner Athletes suffer from three common types of injury to the Achilles Tendon: Paratenonitis – usually referred to as Achilles Tendonitis. Tendinosis. – This is usually a non tender palpable nodule or cord at the Achilles tendon. Rupture of the Tendon (either partial or complete). Paratenonitis: Is an inflammation of the Paratenon - a sheath surrounding the Achilles tendon. Paratenonitis is often caused by repetitive strain or over-use. This injury is common in triathletes. Tendinosis: Refers to degeneration within the tendon due to a previous tear. This condition can be felt as a palpable tendon nodule very close to the heel. The nodule is formed by the accumulation of scar tissue. Circulation to the Achilles tendon is very poor, especially near the heel, resulting in poor oxygen supply. This results in poor healing and formation of microscopic tears, causing the tendon to thicken.

    39. Achilles Tendonitis Running Injury
of achilles tendonitis, why it occurs in runners, and suggestions for treatment. achilles tendonitis. Do squats to stretch your Achilles tendons.......
    http://www.leigh.org/running/tendonitis.html
Achilles Tendonitis The Achilles tendon is a cord that connects the heel to the calf muscle. If either a short calf muscle or a heel that is too far away from the calf muscle pulls too much on the Achilles tendon, you'll feel a lot of pain. Dr. Weisenfeld suggests using your thumb and forefinger to pinch along the Achilles tendon, starting at the heel and working up the back of your leg to the calf. If you feel swelling and/or pain, you have Achilles Tendonitis. Runners with Achilles tendonitis need extra lift in the back of the shoe. Start with 1/4 inch heel lifts and work up to more thickness if necessary. Also, be sure your shoes are flexible at the ball of the foot. Before and after you run, do a lot of wall pushups to stretch your calves. Do knee presses and foot on chair or table to stretch your hamstrings. Do squats to stretch your Achilles tendons. When you first get Achilles tendonitis, take a few days off from running until the pain subsides. Home Injuries [Achilles Tendonitis] Bursitis Buttock Injuries Groin Pull Heel Spurs ... Short Leg
