It results in fatty stools, diarrhea, failure to thrive in infancy, and problems with nerves. Causes and Risks Bassen-Kornzweig syndrome is an autosomal recessive inherited disorder that affects both sexes, but predominantly males (70%). It is due to mutations in one of two genes: apolipoprotein B (APOB) or microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP). The syndrome causes the body not to make lipoproteins (molecules of fat combined with protein ) including low-density lipoproteins ( LDL ), very-low-density lipoproteins (

Abetalipoproteinemia
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Abetalipoproteinemia is a rare inherited disorder of fat metabolism that results in poor absorption of dietary fat and vitamin E Tocopherol , or Vitamin E , is a fat-soluble vitamin in eight forms that is an important antioxidant. Vitamin E is often used in skin creams and lotions because it is believed to play a role in encouraging skin healing and reducing scarring after injuries such as burns. Vitamin E exists in eight different forms. Each form has its own biological activity, the measure of potency or functional use in the body. Alpha-tocopherol is the most active form of vitamin E in humans, and is a powerful biological antioxidant.

The vitamin E deficiency associated with this disease causes problems such as poor transmission of nerve impulses, muscle weakness, and degeneration of the retina The retina is the part of the eye which translates the visual image into a neural signal. It terminates the optic nerve to the photoreceptive cells, retinal receptors (known as rods and cones), which translate the light coming into the eye into biochemical signals and finally to nerve impulses sent back up to the brain. The retina not only detects light, it also plays a significant part in visual perception.
