Extractions: As the vast majority of Proms audiences tend to veer towards conservative programmes, it was hardly surprising (though very disappointing) that the Royal Albert Hall was a barely one third full for this concert of modern works. It remains a mystery why the public tend to be put off by the new, since all music was new once: even Stravinskys Rite of Spring entered into the classical canon soon after its riotous Paris premiere. Oliver Knussen and the BBC Symphony Orchestra opened their programme with Two dances for Les Sylphides (1909) by Frederic Chopin, orchestrated by Stravinsky (its first performance at the Proms). Extractions: Born, Tel Aviv, 1948. Beginning to study music with his father, Zukerman had been accepted to the Israel Conservatory by the age of eight. He studied with some of the best teachers in the world, including Pablo Casals and Issac Stern. He also studied at the Juilliard Institute. He spent the next few years preforming with various orchestras world-wide on violin. Zukerman also preformed on the viola, recording some of the finest examples of modern viola playing ever. While some critics claim he is merely a violinist paying lip-service to the viola for the sake of recording companies, his merrit as a performer and his seemingly genuine interested in the instrument goes a long way to silence them. Not restricting himself solely to performing, Zukerman has also partaken in a vary sucessful career as a conductor, raising the baton over orchestras such as the English Chamber Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Boston Symphony, the Israel Philharmonic, and many others. Most notably, he has also become the music director, conductor, and occasional soloist of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra . Through this excellent organization, Zukerman has vastly increased the popularity of classical music among the general public without comprimising the music's integrity and beauty.
Itzhak Perlman violinist entered the prestigious Levintritt Competition in New York (the same contest that helped to launch the careers of Van Cliburn and pinchas zukerman) http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/2571/perlman.html
Extractions: One of the greatest violinists of our era, Itzhak Perlman was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1945. The son of a barber, he took to the violin at an early age, receiving his first lessons at the Music Academy of Tel Aviv. A prodigy from the start, he was taken to the United States at the age of thirteen to participate in Ed Sullivan's Caravan of Stars, a traveling musical showcase for gifted children. At the end of this somewhat grueling tour, he decided to stay in America to study, and he was quickly awarded scholarships by the Juilliard School and the American-Israeli Foundation to study with noted pedagogue Ivan Galamian and his assistant, Dorothy DeLay. Perlman made his formal debut in the spring of 1963 at Carnegie Hall, playing the Wienawski F-sharp minor Concerto with the National Orchestral Association; there happened to be a newspaper strike that week, so no critical notices were recorded. The next year, however, the young violinist entered the prestigious Levintritt Competition in New York (the same contest that helped to launch the careers of Van Cliburn and Pinchas Zukerman) and won first prize. Thereafter, he signed with legendary impresario Sol Hurok, who booked a fifty-city American tour for his rising star.

Extractions: "Kaplan made his case throughout with a rich, luminous tone quality that hung resonantly in the air; near-perfect intonation, even in the most treacherous multiple-stopped chords; expressive rubatos in the slower dances; sufficiently graceful rhythm in others. He could dig trenchantly into the Sonata No 2's great Fuga, finding the climaxes and crunching them with satisfying, robust attacks...these were formidable performances" [Bach: Solo Sonatas and Partitas] "The man of the moment (Schwarz in his first concerts with the RLPO since appointment was announced) was almost upstaged however in the second piece by violin maestro Mark Kaplan and his dazzling interpretation of one of the great violin pieces - Siebilus' violin concerto in D minor. It comes with the reputation of being a finger breaker but Kaplan's scintillating virtuosity gave us a real performance to remember. His technique was matched only by the crisp vivid resonate tones of his Stradivari violin in a performance of passion which drew gasps from the listeners." Extractions: MIDORI has been playing violin for 24 of her 27 years, and performing for 21. Surrounded by music from birth, as her violinist mother Setsu Goto took her to orchestral rehearsals, she soon fell in love with the violin, and began her first lessons on her own tiny instrument at three. Midori studied and practised daily with Setsu and made astonishing progress. At six, she made her concert debut in her native Osaka, Japan performing one of the extremely difficult Paganini Caprices before a delighted audience, and receiving her first standing ovation of many throughout her distinguished career. Two years later, an American friend of Setsu's taped the prodigy playing concertos by Bach, Paganini and Saint-Saens and sent the recording to renowned Juilliard teacher Dorothy DeLay, who was so astonished by the playing she invited Midori to the 1981 Aspen Music Festival . At Aspen, Midori met the virtuoso Pinchas Zukerman, who wept when he heard the tiny child perform a difficult Bartok concerto, and who later became a close friend and mentor. Midori also performed for Miss de Lay at Aspen. Her mature interpretation of the mighty

August 31, 2000: - Renowned violinist/violist Pinchas Zukerman, visiting Australia as part of the 2000 Olympics Arts Festival, presented masterclasses in three cities. Students from around the country auditioned by tape for the chance to participate and four were chosen to perform at each class. In Sydney, the students were all violinists; most were prize winners of local and international competitions with impressive resumes and all were about 18 years old and currently undertaking tertiary training. Of course, violin and viola students and teachers came from near and far to watch, learn and take the rare opportunity to ask questions of the master. Zukerman opened the class with a sometimes-humourous introduction, explaining to the large audience that although this was a public lesson for advanced students, he would focus on fundamentals of technique, rather than on the music they played because he believes that before one can make music, one must learn to make the sound. None of the students played his or her entire piece; Zukerman listened carefully for about five minutes before interrupting to discuss what he had observed. Here are some of those observations:
