Extractions: In honor of Pinchas Zukerman's 50th birthday on July 16, Classica is broadcasting a three-hour program which documents the versatility and exceptional talent of this great violinist: "Pinchas Zukerman: Here to make music", "Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman: Grand Duo", and "Mozart by Zukerman". Born in Tel Aviv in 1948, Pinchas Zukerman was given his first music lessons by his father. He began attending the Tel Aviv Conservatory at the age of eight and continued his studies at the Music Academy there. When he was 12 years old, Pablo Casals and Isaac Stern recognized his talent and prophesied that he would become one of the best violinists of all time. In 1962 Zukerman obtained a scholarship to study with Ivan Galamian at the famous Juilliard School in New York. Five years later, he won the first prize in the Leventritt Competition. This marked the beginning of his career, which has taken him to the top of the musical world as violinist, violist and conductor. At his concert debut in Amsterdam, the press hailed him as a "reborn Paganini". Christopher Nupen's documentary "Here To Make Music" follows the development of this unique talent from Zukerman's beginnings to his early successes. The film was shot over a period of seven years in Italy, Israel, Denmark, Germany, London and New York, and presents historical photo material as well as excerpts from Zukerman's celebrated concert appearances.
