Extractions: Vanessa-Mae The "AMAZING" Violin Player I'm really glad that I chose to disregard the negative reviews on this young lady's cd. I love classical music by the masters, but I'm always open to new sounds. Vanessa-Mae supplies those new sounds, and, if I may sound like a typical male, looks good doing it. I will certainly be getting more of her music cd's, and while her music will not be stored with Motzart, Bach, and Vivaldi, she will be on my shelf with my "Hooked On", Mannheim Steamroller, and other FUN cd's. This music is GREAT to listen to, at least in my mind, and since I paid for it, thats all that counts.

Vanessa-Mae, young violin virtuoso, was born on 27 October 1978. Gifted with a prodigious technique, and a `rich and full' `golden tone' that allow her to perform, `a stunning display of violinistic virtuosity' with a non-chalance that left one open-mouthed', Vanessa-Mae has also been compared by distinguished musicians to Heifetz, Menuhin, Kreisler, Mozart and Mendelssohn for her `deep musical feeling', her `spirituality' and `maturity beyond her years'.

Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D, Op. 35 F irst performed in Vienna by Adolf Brodsky with the Philharmoniker and Hans Richter in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein, 4 December 1881, Tchaikovsky's only fiddle concerto was completed during the spring of 1878 (17 March - 11 April), in Clarens overlooking Lake Geneva. Inspired by Lalo's Symphonie espagnole , and written with the "loving" help of his friend (and former student), the violinist Josef Kotek, he intended it originally to be a virtuoso showpiece for the Hungarian Leopold Auer, professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire in succession to Wieniawski. But Auer believed it to be "unviolinistic" and in need of "thorough revision" (contrary to the young Brodsky: "How delightful it is! - one can play it endlessly and never weary!") - and refused to be associated with it in public until as late as 1893, the year of the composer's suicide. Architecturally, the impulse of the opening movement (a modified sonata design) is classically direct. Firstly, a brief Introduction, got under way by a memorable tune on the strings destined (like that of the B flat minor Piano Concerto's preface) never to return. Secondly, an Exposition (1:03) comprised of two lyrical ideas punctuated by a transition of clipped rhythms and triplets and rounded off by a codetta of rapid double-stops, each stage introduced by the soloist. Thirdly, an orchestral Ritornello (5:46), based on the first subject (in the dominant, A major) - a resoundingly high-flying flourish. Fourthly, growing out of this paragraph, a Development divided into three sections - the first (gravitating towards C major

Vanessa-Mae's just her first name: her full name is Vanessa-Mae Vanakorn Nicholson IV. OK I'm making the last bit up, but you can see why she decided to shorten it for the great unwashed! Just another classical violinist pretending to be a popstar? Well yes and no... V-MVN first came to world attention in a concerto performance with the Philharmonia Orchestra aged just 10. She went on to become the youngest ever soloist to record both the Tchaikovsky and Beethoven concertos. Since then, however, she's become world famous for her pioneering brand of 'techno-accoustic crossover', and thanks to some aggressive marketing she's got as much to do with pop as she has with classical music. She says: "Beethoven and Beatles, Mozart and Michael Jackson, Paganini and Prince - I like them all. I have always known what I like and what I don`t. What I like, I want to play. You only live once and this life, I will play the violin hopefully for most of it. I therefore intend to play just about everything I like on the violin - and more...." They say: "a true child prodigy - like Mozart and Mendelssohn" - The Royal College of Music on the 11-year old Vanessa-Mae.
