I'd picked up her rock-classical fusion album, the Violin Player, a year ago and found it a throwback to similar fusion efforts 2 decades ago. It had a few moments that were interesting, but for the most part it was fairly forgettable. (You know, there's probably something dubious about it when it goes double platinum in Poland! Granted, the Poles know their Chopin backwards and forwards, but when it comes to popular music... I think it also went double platinum in Malaysia or Thailand. I didn't find this out until after I'd bought the CD, otherwise I may not have done so.)

Vanessa-Mae supplies those new sounds, and, if I may sound like a typical male, looks good doing it. I will certainly be getting more of her music cds, and while her music will not be stored with Motzart, Bach, and Vivaldi, she will be on my shelf with my "Hooked On", Mannheim Steamroller, and other FUN cds. This music is GREAT to listen to, at least in my mind, and since I paid for it, thats all that counts.
Extractions: While it would be, of course, somewhat unfair to rate this CD recording of some of the worlds most famous pieces for virtuoso violin the same way one would for a mature, older artists recordings, it is horrendous marketing strategy on the part of Sony Classical to release this three CD set on the premise that they are "brilliant," as stated on the back of the CD case. They are anything but, as a quick listen to any one of the three CDs will reveal to the discerning ear. The pieces on the Virtuoso Album CD arent worth much colourless, soulless renditions of miniatures that have been performed better by countless of other violinists, at every measure of age (Chang does a splendid job of the Carmen Fantasy, and she recorded it in the studios when she was only nine years old).
