This past weekend the society's "Winter Interlude" reunited stellar musicians, many of whom are familiar from the group's summer appearances, from across the country and Canada. At Sunday's third and final concert, the audience's murmurs of satisfaction were audible after nearly every movement. Schumann's "Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano" in G minor featured violinist Ida Levin, cellist Ronald Thomas, and pianist Jeremy Denk in a richly textured piece that moved between agitation and reflection. Despite the lovely melodies and exciting tempos, Levin and Thompson's tones, particularly in their sustained vibrato sounds, did not match throughout. Levin dug in for an earthier, more organic sound, while Thomas displayed a brighter clarity. The musical equivalent of a bonbon, Grieg's "Two Elegiac Melodies" for four-handed piano delivered a short, yet stately opportunity for pianists Denk and William Wolfram. The two players combined forces so seamlessly that if you closed your eyes it sounded like one person playing an unusually dense piano part.

She talks openly about herself and her blossoming career, her almost casual manner belying the seriousness of her commitment to music and the art of violin playing. The conversation turns quickly to the "infamous" cover of her first CD, where she appears discreetly nude, hidden by her violin. In answer to the outcry from critics and colleagues, she explains that her CD cover was simply projecting her feeling that there is nothing between her and her violin. She considers it tame compared to images portrayed in the pop commercial world. The CD has proved successful in attracting newcomers to St. John's work, drawing them to the highly aesthetic world of her playing. It has sold over 30,000 copies and received praise for its natural and accomplished performances a remarkable debut recording in the highly competitive world of classical violin soloists. Reaching a large public While hoping to present more challenging works by Prokofiev or Bartok, St. John is quite content to play a Bach concerto in Vancouver or the

The Strad magazine selected her as one of "the stars of the next decade" and called her "an electrifying player, as deeply satisfying in Bach as she is bewitchingly seductive in Waxman's 'Carmen' Fantasy. The L.A. Times has said: "St. John brings to the stage personal charisma, an unflagging musical imagination and genuine passion. Her two albums to date are bona-fide classics of the violin discography." In January 2002, Lara released her third CD on her own label. Bach: The Concerto Album and has received enthusiastic reviews. Gramophone Magazine placed the disc in its strongly recommended section, and wrote "It is difficult to argue with such a technically dazzling and unfailingly musical interpretation."

"Oh, it was a very good thing," she says with a giggle about the previous night's celebration. "But it's going to be quite awhile before I do that again." Canadian St. John, 28, may be known as much for her good looks, free-flowing comments and Bohemian outlook on life as for her violin playing. The CD cover of St. John's "Bare Bach Works for Violin Solo" she pretty much bares it all with the violin strategically hiding body parts. "I am who I am, whoever that is," says St. John who performs with Sunday and Tuesday at the Blaisdell Concert Hall in her Honolulu Symphony debut. Music In The Ruins Thu, Jul 6, 2000; by Michael Zajac. Winnipeg This weekend on Saturday, March 13th, a new exhibit and performance series opens at the St. Norbert Arts and Cultural Centre (SNACC). True to form, Toronto artist John Scott has produced a gritty display of sinister imagery for this new drawing installation. Scotts ominous figures loom large along the walls and across the ceiling, transforming a usually bright and airy room into a place of menace and dark foreboding.
