The Cathedral Choir sings for the 11AM Sunday service of worship September through June, as well as special services and concerts. This renovation marks the third phase in the instrument's history, which began in the early 1930s when the chancel organ was built for the sanctuary of the present building by Ernest M. Skinner, one of the foremost organ builders of his day. In 1969 a new and larger instrument was built in the rear gallery by the Schlicker Organ Company, who also constructed an Italian-style continuo organ located above the south choir. All the organs can be played from either or both of the two consoles, one in the chancel, the other in the rear gallery. Midday Organ Recital

Extractions: Last revisions made The Late English Baroque was a transition to the new Classical period. There was a general decline in music at Court, and the Chapel Royal from William and Mary. Many Baroque styles flowered under a eminent group of English composers: Blow, Clarke, Croft, Locke, and Purcell. Instrumental compositions based on European forms developed their own English counterparts and traditions. Public music for the theater, and the opera continue to develop. The centralization of the music culture in London. [Ed. Note: The coverage for Late English Baroque is intended for those mature musicians primarily active before 1714. Many of the individuals listed here continued to be active after 1714 into the early Classical period during the Reign of George I. Coverage after 1714 is incomplete, please consult other sources.] ABRAHALL, Gilbert. English musician. 1700-171(8): Musician in Ordinary for the Private Musick. ASPINWALL, Edward.

Extractions: Overall this is a good recording, but with many loose ends. I think the German pronunciation of people like Christus neede sorting out for a start, and he wasn't the only one. I also think the bass soloist lets the whole thing down. Two points on other reviews. The umlaut on Juden is missed out deliberately for reasons of political correctness. The other is that the altos are not boys but fully grown men. I'm sure they wouldn't be impressed... Naxos doesn't usually record large works twice, but this is their second St. John Passion, the earlier one being by the Baroque Scholars and a fine one. This one has the unusual feature of being almost entirely a product of the music scholars of New College, Oxford. The choir is the New College Choir (SATB 14,4,4,5), using boy trebles and altos (as Bach did at St. Thomas Church, Leipzig). The soloists are all graduates or current members of the the college. The instrumentalists, using historically accurate instruments and performance practice, is the so-called 'Collegium Novum' (Latin for 'New College,' get it?), an ad-hoc group led by the well-known baroque violinist Alison Bury and put together for this recording, so it could be called, I suppose, the 'New New College.' The conductor is Edward Higginbottom, who has been director of the Choir since the mid-1970s.

Extractions: SUN MUSIC CRITIC Of course not all parties go just as planned. There were supposed to be 12 musicians to fete Leila Getz on the combination of her birthday and the 20th anniversary of the Vancouver Recital Society Tuesday at the Chan. But the Borromeo String Quartet of Boston couldn't come when a violinist got chicken pox, and the organizers (still trying to keep Getz in the dark about the players) suddenly had to find, and did, a fill-in fiddler and cellist to make up a quartet with musicians already on hand. So there were 10, not 12, and it didn't matter. They represented a small, eloquent fraction of the hundreds of internationally proven and eminently promising talents that Getz has imported for the last 20 years. Some who couldn't make it in person conveyed their congratulations by video: Cecilia Bartoli, chatty and merry; a dignified, sincere Evgeny Kissin; Bryn Terfel at home in windswept Wales, serenading her with his booming baritone; Yefim Bronfman conveying like sentiments around a mouthful of sushi, then beginning Tchaikovsky's
