December 1997 John Powell "Virginia Symphony" KAREL HUSA (b.1921): Apotheosis of this Earth for Chorus and Orchestra, Music for Prague 1968. Space prohibits the effusions one would like to pour forth upon first hearing Apotheosis but, suffice it to say, this 1970 work (amazingly, originally for school band and orchestrated in 1973) is an emotional roller-coaster whose second movement is nothing less than a depiction of the destruction of the planet and which concludes with the echoes of the dead planet receding into space. If you like Music for Prague, don't miss this! University of Louisville Concert Choir, Louisville Orchestra; Jorge Mester, Karel Husa. First Edition Music FECD-0009 (U.S.A.) In November of 2001, we offered a Hungaroton double-CD set of all four Hubay violin concertos so the surprise and pleasure at discovering that Hyperion's "Romantic Violin Concerto" series is not dead in the water is mixed with some dismay at repertoire duplication. However, in addition to the concertos (the third Hubay's most popular and most performed in its four-section, single-movement Lisztian form and the fourth from the same period [1906-07] with its unusual, non-romantic structure based on baroque forms), there is a substantial addition in the 15-minute set of variations which offers the expected brilliance and showmanship for the soloist. September 1999 Catalogue GEORGE MACFARREN PETERSON-BERGER - Symphony No. 2 JOHN BLACKWOOD MCEWEN (1868-1948): Hymn on the Morning of Christ's Nativity. McEwen's elaborate setting of a portion of Milton's ode "On the Morning of Christ's Nativity" dates from 1901-05 and manages to synthesize the barbaric, oriental rhythms of the Russian National School with the tormented chromaticism and heavy orchestral textures of Franck and the hyper-emotionalism of Chausson with the English choral tradition of Parry and Elgar. This was the composer's last large-scale work for chorus and orchestra and is a strikingly original monument to an original musical thinker only now being rediscovered. Janice Watson (soprano), Brighton Festival Chorus, London Philharmonic Orchestra; Alasdair Mitchell. Chandos 9669 (England) AMY BEACH (1867-1944): Solo Piano Music, Vol. 3 - 4 Sketches, Op. 15, Fantasia Fugata, Op. 87, Transcription of Richard Strauss' Serenade, 5 Improvisations, Op. 148, Tyrolean Valse-fantaisie, Op. 116, Eskimos, Op. 64, Nocturne, Op. 107, From Grandmother's Garden, Op. 97. The third and final volume of Beach's piano music further confirms her status as a versatile composer, running the gamut from the early Four Sketches which produced a virtuoso piece, Fire-Flies, which was taken up by Busoni, Rosenthal and Hoffman, to the advanced op. 148 of 1938 which has a gravity and intensity of expression worthy of late Brahms but updated with bittersweet recollections of pre-World War I years, spiky syncopations and Native American influences. Eskimos (1904) is perhaps the most exotic of the pieces on this disc, using Inuit melodies worked out in Western European tradition. Joanne Polk (piano). Arabesque Z6721 (U.S.A.)

America, a Prophecy must have seemed a rather cold bath at the end of 1999, with its texts meditating on the destruction of the Mayan civilization by the Spanish conquistadors. The mezzo (the amazing Susan Bickley here in her early-music mode of vibratoless intensity) sings a text in English recounting events while the interjections of the chorus are in Latin and Spanish, based on Spanish music from the time of the Mayan conquest. Both intensely lyrical and harmonically free, the work is a riot of sharply contrasting colors. It is, of course, especially chilling in light of the events that followed the premiere 22 months to the day, when finally nobody was safe. By contrast, January Writ

Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival hagai shaham has appeared as a soloist and recitalist broadly In autumn 1992 shahammade his recording debut a pupil of the legendary violinist Leopold Auer http://www.kuhmofestival.fi/eleiriopettaja.html
Extractions: her artistic development was greatly influenced by her grandfather, Anisim Berlin (a pupil of the legendary violinist Leopold Auer), and by Professor Galina Kozolupova, with whom she studied for nearly 15 years. Other major influences have been Mstislav Rostropovich, her teacher at the Moscow Conservatoire from 1964 onwards, and her husband, the violinist Oleg Kagan. Her success in the ARD Munich competition in 1967 and the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1972 paved the way for Natalia Gutman to the international venues as soloist with illustrious orchestras. In addition to her active concert career she is Professor of the cello at the Stuttgart Music Academy.

Presto Scherzando Capriccio Brillant, Op.22: Andante - Allegro Con Fuoco Mendelssohn's First Piano Concerto is much more popular, and more frequently played, than his Second. When you listen to this disc, you'll find out why. The First is an inspired piece with memorable themes, enjoyable but not ostentatious display for the piano, and a great sense of fun. The Second has unmemorable themes and a similar style without conveying the sense of fun. For that matter, I've never thought much of the Capriccio brillant , a rather empty showpiece. For those who like lesser Mendelssohn better than I do, this disc is very well played throughout, although the piano takes Howard Shelley's attention away from conducting and the orchestral playing isn't as distinctive as the piano playing.

Extractions: The Romantic Piano Concerto series (currently at volume 31) has become one of Hyperions most popular projects to date, and this disc should help guide The Romantic Violin Concerto series to similar critical acclaim. Hubays 3rd concerto mirrors the format of the piano concertos of Liszt (with whom he studied composition) in that it is performed without a break between the movements. The 4th concerto adheres to a more traditional baroque format regarding structure, melody and harmony, hence its title. The third work on the disc comprises a theme and twelve variations. All three works are virtuosic display pieces comparable to the concertos of Wieniawski and Vieuxtemps, and call for much pyrotechnics from the soloist. Hubay is widely acknowledged as the founder of the Hungarian school of violin playing. His list of prodigies includes the virtuoso violinist Ilona Fehér who went on to teach Hagai Shaham. The sonorous, round and broad tone that is the main beauty of the Hubay-school is unmistakable in Shahams performance here, making this a stunning first recording for Hyperion. Recorded in Greyfriars Church, Edinburgh, on 13 14 December 2002

Classical Net Review - Hubay - Violin Concertos #3 & 4 The Third Violin Concerto is brimful of ideas and with a virtuoso performance byHagai shaham, a sensational young violinist who really puts the music through http://www.classical.net/music/recs/reviews/h/hyp67367a.html
Extractions: Hyperion CDA67367 68m DDD The Third Violin Concerto is brimful of ideas and with a virtuoso performance by Hagai Shaham, a sensational young violinist who really puts the music through its paces. Lovers of the violin repertoire will also wax lyrical on the 4 th Concerto, a truly beautiful work that offers similar opportunities for the soloist. What is interesting is that Hubay wrote these concertos in four movements instead of the normal three, this affords a certain amount of variety and make the works look like mini-symphonies. As always, the sound is top quality and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra are obviously enjoying themselves under the charismatic direction of Martyn Brabbins. Strongly recommended to all those fiddler lovers! Gerald Fenech Search Reviews Back to the Review Index
