The sound is excellent, and this is not an uninteresting program, but it could have been so much more if the duo hadn't been afraid to let the beast out of the cage." - Ritter, ARG

Extractions: This student work was written in 1925 when Shostakovich was still an advocate of the new Soviet ideology that set out to reform music that was "technically superior in form, but bourgeois in concept." Yet, even under those conditions, the work, especially in the Scherzo, reflects the savage, satiric edge that permeates much of Shostakovich’s music. It was an edge, of course, that was variously supported according to the political whims of the moment. (His first symphony was an instant success, while later works were often attacked for "bourgeois decadence." Still others won the Stalin Prize.) The more somber Prelude is an elegy to the poet Volodya Kurchavov and is reflective of the later symphonies.
Rivka Golani Golani Rivka Golani is recognized as one of the great violinist and musicians of InSeptember 1990, Arnon Erez and his duo partner, hagai shaham, won the ARD http://www.thepharostrust.org/rivka.htm
Extractions: Rivka Golani Rivka Golani is recognized as one of the great violinist and musicians of modern times. Her contribution to the advancement of viola technique has already given her a place in the history of the instrument and has been a source of inspiration not only to other players but also to many composers who have been motivated by her mastery to write especially for the viola. More than 200 pieces have been written for her and more are currently being written of which 37 are concertos , a record matched by no other violist in history. Ms. Golanis awesome technique, riveting stage presence, and superbly sensitive musicianship have made her a favourite with music lovers and critics alike. Allied to her technical ability, Rivka Golanis approach to the instrument is at once passionate and sensitive; and her performances, both on record and in the concert hall, reveal the originality of interpretation and musicianship of a great artist. Familiar to audiences throughout the world, Rivka Golani has performed as a soloist with the Boston Symphony, BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw, Israel Philharmonic, Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Montreal Symphony and many others. Her on-stage charisma unfailingly adds excitement to her appearances, and her reputation as a teacher draws students from all over the world to her master classes. Rivka Golanis most recent CD on CBC Records, entitled Fairies, features an all Schumann offering of viola and piano repertoire. Among her current projects is the recording of a 2-CD set of Bach viola solo repertoire for CBC Records, which includes the Six Suites, Chaconne, and Bach-Kodaly Chromatic Fantasy, to be released later this year. Another CD of a viola concerto by Peter Paul Koprowski, written for Rivka Golani and recorded with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra is also awaiting release this season.

Still, from the way they handle this music, the transitional early Romantic period is clearly theirs, perhaps even more so than the late Baroque. Listen to the opening of the songful final movement of the Piano Trio and enjoy this seemingly effortless rendition Purchase here Released under the auspices of the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music (founded 1990), which intends to issue fifty discs devoted to diverse, musical genres and idioms of Jewish expression, this album debuts a series of pieces by Joseph Achron (1886-1943). Prior to this release, I knew Achron only by a few, small pieces championed by Jascha Heifetz, in which Achron acted as piano accompanist. Having been raised in St. Petersburg, Achron came under the spell of the Gesellschaft (the Society for Jewish Folk-Music), which inculcated his abiding interests in folklore, religious hymnody, cantorial inflection, as well as in fusing a polyphonic and harmonically eclectic blend of elements from Scriabin and the Second Viennese School.
Hubay: Scènes De La Csárda shaham and first rate production by Eric Wen (a fine violinist and teacher needs passionateadvocacy if it s not to sound trite, and hagai shaham, who s already http://www2.hyperion-records.co.uk/details/67441.asp
Extractions: These generously filled CDs present sparkling performaces of Hubays epic Scènes de la csárda alongside his two sets of Poèmes hongrois and provide their first complete recording. The Scènes are in the tradition of Liszts Hungarian Rhapsodies, Brahmss Hungarian Dances and Sarates Zigeunerweisen, and reflect the nineteenth centurys fondness for romanticized gypsy music as a worthy source of entertainment in middle-class salons and at aristocratic balls. Written over a period of some forty years, these fourteen perfectly crafted showpieces are dedicated individually to many of the periods most influential figures, several famous violin virtuosi among them. Passionate melodies and furious violinistic pyrotechnics combine to make this set into a classic of the genre. Hubays two sets of Poèmes hongrois, written in 1885 and 1899 respectively, take further folk-like melodies and transform them into highly elaborate miniatures every bit as worthy of exploration as their more glamorous cousins, the Scènes. A comprehensive booklet includes music examples illustrating each of the innumerable melodies used by Hubay.
