Educated in New York City at the Juilliard School and Columbia University, he also represents a small circle of thoughtful young artists that are bringing back hope for the future of classical music, providing fresh, exciting and accessible venues to share their art. After a highly successful concert at Shriver Hall, we sat down and spoke about some of his experiences and his take on the classical scene. Insisting I call him Gil, Shaham was incredibly personable, humorous, open to share his ideas and most of all, humble. Q. Thanks for taking the time to speak with me. Bravo on the recital. A. Thank you so much for coming. It means a great deal to me that there were so many young people in the audience last night. You guys were very inspiring. Q. Can you express in some way what music has meant to you throughout your life? Q. What do you think of the state of music in American society at present? A. Its lack of popular appeal is our fault, the performers. You know, we had a great set-up at the end of the last century. Concert halls were the largest venues to reach people. However, since then, the world has undergone a huge revolution. Now, the competition for the attention of people takes place in their living room through the television. We have been negligent to a certain extent. We havent succeeded in reaching people. See, unfortunately, people are intimidated by classical music and they really shouldnt be. It should hold the same place as looking at a painting. Music is direct communication from the heart of the composer to the heart of the listener. It requires no prerequisites.

Violin Sonata No. 1, Op. 13 (1875), which opens the program, Shaham reveals the works mercurial expressiveness while avoiding grotesque shifts in dynamics or an exaggerated rubato. His tone is beautiful throughout and every passage is incorporated into a conception of the pieces structure. There is not a false step in the performance, and Akira Eguchi provides able support in the demanding piano part. Between these two pieces are an assortment of occasional pieces and song transcriptions, including the exquisite Berceuse, Op. 16. Gil Shaham is a down to earth and approachable musician who likes to find the best place in town for Chinese dumplings. A self-professed CD addict, Mr. Shaham's introduction to music came in the form of a transistor radio that he received from his parents when he was four years old. He listened to music intently, and kept the radio under his pillow at night. He then inherited his parents' old stereo, and by seven, Gil was listening to Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique while gazing at the psychedelic cover. A musician was born. Born in 1971 in Illinois, Gil Shaham moved with his family to Israel and began violin studies after that fateful Berlioz moment. He debuted at age 10 with the Jerusalem Symphony and the Israel Philharmonic, and shortly after, continued studies in New York at the Juilliard School in New York with Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang, as well as studied at Columbia University.

Living / Arts CLASSICAL NOTES By Richard Dyer, Globe Staff, 1/23/2004 The bad news came in a phone call to violinist Gil Shaham from his regular record producer at Deutsche Grammophon. ADVERTISEMENT "After 10 years with the company," the voice said, "this must be difficult for you, but we've decided not to continue your contract." Shaham had made more than 15 albums for the prestigious label some of them, like Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," international bestsellers. There had even been a fluke when an album of Paganini duets for violin and guitar that Shaham recorded with Goeran Soellscher was chosen as the theme music for a television soap opera in Korea, and the recording began to fly out of the stores in that country. Still, the handwriting had been on the wall for some time. The major labels like DG were storm-tossed, and some of Shaham's proposals, such as one for an album of music by Faure, had been turned down because, he says, "they were not commercially attractive enough." The company then hired photogenic violinist Hilary Hahn and proclaimed her the leader of a new generation of talent. What Shaham decided to do was to create his own company, Canary, and record the Faure album anyway. In starting his label, Shaham was following in the footsteps of ensembles like the Tallis Scholars, the London Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the cello-piano duet of David Finkel and Wu Han, and such solo artists as soprano Edita Gruberova and cellist Matt Haimovitz. Shaham is probably today's most prominent classical instrumentalist to create his own label.

Even the magnificent artistry of violinist Gil Shaham and his pianist sister Orli Shaham couldn't breath life into Copland's sterile, austere Sonata for Violin and Piano heard in Carmel's Sunset Center this week in the Carmel Music Society's final concert of the season. Although there is much to admire in many of Copland's works, this sonata goes on and on, seemingly forever. I doubt that it is a work likely to inspire many of the young violinists in the audience (and many were there accompanied by their violinist teachers) to put this piece on their wish list. That said, the rest of the concert was in a word, superb! The crown jewel of the evening was the concluding work, the Brahms Sonata No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 108. This was music making on a sublime level. Exhibiting a total command of his instrument, Gil Shaham gave us a very persuasive account of this work, and it was masterful playing that always served genuine musical purposes. There was never any gratuitous display of technique or virtuosity - just glorious music making

Extractions: CLASSICAL REVIEW By Andrew Wong Staff Writer Boston Symphony Orchestra Antonio Pappano, conductor Gil Shaham, violin Symphony Hall Jan. 24, 8 p.m. The subsequent cadenza proved why the Grammy award-winning violinist has had so much international success in the past ten years. Following the entrance of the orchestra, a somber, reflective duet between the violin and bassoon introduced the Bach chorale that Berg placed so carefully in the second movement. The wind section followed with a peaceful restatement of the chorale bringing calm to the atonal storm. The Allegro lacked the fiery urgency required by the opening bars, with the snare overpowering most of the orchestra, and the bass section led a sloppy accompaniment of the syncopated sections. The wind section, as well as a strong percussion lineup, seemed to pick up some of the slack in the fourth movement, however. In the final bars, Pappano managed to create enough energy to finish strongly, despite the weakness of the earlier movements. This story was published on Wednesday, January 28, 2004.
