T-Shirts Jokes Quotes On Nov. 18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, the violinist, came on stage to give a concert at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. If you have ever been to a Perlman concert, you know that getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He was stricken with polio as a child, and so he has braces on both legs and walks with the aid of two crutches. To see him walk across the stage one step at a time, painfully and slowly, is an unforgettable sight. He walks painfully, yet majestically, until he reaches his chair. Then he sits down, slowly, puts his crutches on the floor, undoes the clasps on his legs, tucks one foot back and extends the other foot forward. Then he bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the conductor and proceeds to play. By now, the audience is used to this ritual. They sit quietly while he makes his way across the stage to his chair. They remain reverently silent while he undoes the clasps on his legs. They wait until he is ready to play. But this time, something went wrong. Just as he finished the first few bars, one of the strings on his violin broke. You could hear it snap it went off like gunfire across the room. There was no mistaking what that sound meant. There was no mistaking what he had to do. People who were there that night thought to themselves, "He'll have to get up, put on the clasps again, pick up the crutches and limp his way off stage to either find another violin or else find another string for this one."

Extractions: Ms. Tully is a student of Mr. Perlman, with whom she began studying in the summer of 2002 at the Perlman Music Program. She started her violin studies in Vancouver at the age of four, after declaring to her parents that all she wanted for Christmas was a violin. Her former teachers include Lawrie Hill and Andrew Dawes. Since giving her first public recital at age six, she has participated in master classes with artists including violinists Mr. Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman, Midori, and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, and cellist Lynn Harrell for chamber music. For three years, Ms. Tully worked extensively with Ms. DeLay and Dr. Won Bin Yim at the Aspen Music Festival, and with Mr. Zukerman and Patinka Kopec at the National Arts Centre Young Artists Program. Now when at home in Texas, she coaches with Jan Sloman of the Dallas Symphony in addition to studying with Mr. Perlman in New York.

Extractions: Autumn 1984, my favorite string player , the god who is Itzhak Perlman was playing a few gigs with the Oregon Symphony. My viola teacher (who happened to be a violinist) played in the first violin section of the OSO. A limited number of rehearsal passes were available for members to distribute to their students. Would I like to go? Woohoo! I sit amongst about twenty music students scattered among the orchestra level seats in Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Most of them are half my age. (After a while you become inured to the embarrassment.) We wait in hushed awe. Perlman makes his way onto the stage from the wings with his metal crutches (I believe his disability is due to childhood polio) to vigorous applause from the orchestra and the rehearsal audience. A gentleman carries his Stradivarius for him until he is settled in a wide black metal chair. With his trademark good humor and a quip (I couldn't hear all that well but I think he joked about taking a tempo that was not humanly possible) he was ready for a brief rehearsal of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. Itzhak Perlman is a marvel to watch and, of course, a treat for the ears. When you see his hands (on tv), it's hard to believe that those thick fingers can move so quickly and with such precision. Instead of holding his instrument under his chin at a 45 degree angle from his chest as most players do, it sits almost on top of his left shoulder and nearly extends the line segment that the two shoulders form, but his head faces forward looking down.

Extractions: Itzhak Perlman, In the Fiddler's House (Angel Records, 1995) From the formal opening triumphant strains of "Brave Old World" to the highly-varied, improvisational closing "Di Gayster," this recording explores the nooks and crannies of Klezmer music. The brain-child of Michael Alpert, violinist for the group Brave Old World, this recording explores four of the best-known contemporary Klezmer groups (the Klezmatics, the Andy Statmand Klezmer Orchestra, the Klezmer Conservatory Band, and Brave Old World) and, in the process, gives a brilliant overview of what Klezmer music is all about. The addition of Itzhak Perlman is the piece de resistance. The best way to comprehend the scope and depth of the recording is to get to know the featured performers. Brave Old World was formed in 1989 in an effort to bring new Klezmer music to the world as a whole. This band has a style all their own, taking the roots of Yiddish music to new heights with a bit of jazz-like improvisation and a heart-felt sincerity. Their innovative material has included songs about contemporary issues (such as the fall of the Berlin Wall) and collaborative efforts with a wide variety of Eastern European musicians. The Klezmatics work a great deal with traditional material, giving it a modern edge that appeals to a wide variety of audiences. Their vocals and clarinet lines (both alto and bass) give their music a wonderful layered texture.

Extractions: International Emmy and Grammy Award-winning violinist and recording artist Itzhak Perlman will be putting the acoustics in Miller Auditorium to use Wednesday evening. "Perlman was brought to Miller by the former executive director Bill Biddle, who was doing most all of the bookings for the seasons," said Bethany Gauthier, assistant marketing director for Miller Auditorium. "A lot of time goes into bringing large names such as Perlman to Miller." Perlman, who was scheduled to perform Oct. 1, 2003, had to reschedule his performance because of a death in his family, according to Gauthier. Ticket holders for that date will be able to use their tickets for the 7:30 p.m. performance. Perlman will be performing Igor Stravinsky's Suite Italienne, Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 5 in F major, Op. 24 "Spring" and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's Episodes for violin and piano. Pianist Rohan De Silva will be accompanying Perlman throughout the program. Other music will be announced. "Although we expect this performance to have a full house, seats are still available," Gauthier said.

This year's program attracted 68 students, 28 of whom are from countries other than China, and all of whom were hand-selected by Perlman. Wearing T-shirts with the logo, "beautiful music", these 12-18 year old students of violin, viola, cello and piano are expected to experience Perlman's doctrine of "joyful learning" during their three-week close encounter with the master.

Tickets are still available at the on-site ticket counter located in the Grand Hall of the Pennsylvania Convention Center). By H. Franklin Bunn, M.D. Itzhak Perlman is widely regarded as the reigning virtuoso of the violin. Like cellist Yo-Yo Ma, he enjoys superstar status akin to that accorded to sports figures such as Tiger Woods and Magic Johnson. His primacy in music has been duly recognized. He has been honored with four Emmy Awards and has received honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, Brandeis, Roosevelt, Yeshiva and Hebrew Universities. In 1986, President Reagan honored Perlman with a Medal of Liberty and in December 2000, President Clinton awarded him the National Medal of Arts. Perlman was born in Israel in 1945. After completing his musical training in Tel Aviv, he came to New York and gained national recognition by an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1958. Following studies at Juilliard, Perlman won the prestigious Leventritt competition in 1964. From then on he has remained one of the most sought after and beloved musicians of our time. At the risk of regarding Itzhak Perlman in a parochial way, it can be said that his priorities have much in common with the ideals and mission of ASH. First of all, he is, like the best of hematology clinicians and investigators, a consummate colleague. He is well-known for his collaborations with the worlds greatest musicians, beginning with his lifelong friendship with fellow Israelis Pinchas Zukerman and Daniel Barenboim. He remains a remarkably popular and flexible musical partner, joining forces with virtually all of the worlds leading conductors as well as other star instrumentalists and singers. Like many of our ASH colleagues, Perlmans musical life makes him peripatetic. He travels all over the world and has performed in remarkably varied venues.

The fall season will begin Sept. 11 with the traditional Fanfara gala at the Kentucky Center's Whitney Hall. The program will be conducted by Steven Mercurio, probably best known for collaborating with such singers as Andrea Bocelli and Placido Domingo, and for his series of Christmas concerts with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. For his Fanfara program, Mercurio will be joined by bluegrass/classical crossover violinist Mark O'Connor in a performance of O'Connor's "Call of the Mockingbird." The concert will also include Barner's "Adagio for Strings," Copland's "A Lincoln Portrait" and John Alden Carpenter's 1924 jazz-infused "Skyscrapers."

Alec Wilkinson was just a young guy when he decided that he could become a writer and maybe get rich. He found the perfect teacher. After a career editing John Updike and Vladimir Nabokov, William Maxwell took this clueless kid under his wing. Wilkinson is now a writer for the New Yorker himself, and he recently published a book about his 25-year relationship with Maxwell. Produced by David Krasnow. Painter Bob Ross died nine years ago. It is in the very delicate nuances that he 'misses' that the great Jewish player proves himself human. One giant in human terms, that is. But the most human of interpreters. Garry Ianco said: Perlman has provided his listeners with a most glorious recording. The vast tonal qualities he has when playing puts the listener into a state of enchantment. The wonderous Chaccone of the Dm Partita takes the listener through a gamit of worlds and tonal dimensions with its enormously difficult variations. Anyone tired of so-called "authentic" performances should check out this recording, its bound even to impress the Auer schooled listeners. Jasper Cooper said: One of the worst Bach recordings I have ever heard. Muddled, unexpressive. The Violin Sonatas and Partitas are perhaps some of the best things Bach wrote, and this recording does not do them justice. I can only imagine that the people who recommend this recording have not heard any others.
