Extractions: February 18, 2000. Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter , still in her thirties, is in the third charmed stage of a great career. In her first she was a child star who was announced to the world at age 13 by Herbert von Karajan as the "greatest musical prodigy since the young Yehudi Menuhin." In stage two she was the shapely covergirl in the sleeveless gown, recording the great 19th Century chesnuts of the violin repertoire. Stage three began with her discovery of 20th century music in general and the work of Witold Lutoslawski in particular. A lot of it can sound like the record of a nightmare: the 20th Century made music that's notorious for emptying concert halls; yet not when Anne-Sophie Mutter plays it. In her hands it is music that touches big emotions - not always to stroke or even please the ear. But she's made it her challenge this winter to persuade listeners to join her on a journey, and they're flocking to her. Anne-Sophie Mutter - in the second hour of The Connection.

Violin Anne-Sophie Mutter - A Life with Beethoven Media DVD Release 12 December, 2000 Count Price Label Uni/Deutsche Grammophon Availability Usually ships within 2 to 3 days Rating [1-5] For thousands of Mutter fans, this DVD is godsend. It includes two programs of Beethoven's Sonata. The first one is the Sonata for Piano and Violin No. 5 in F major (Spring), 26 minutes. The second one is the Sonata for Piano and Violin No. 9 in A major (Kreutzer), 44 minutes. ASM is amazing and perfect in both programs, working together with her long-time partner, Lambert Orkis. The music is exuberant with color, emotion and energy. This was a live recording in Theatre of Champs-Elysees in France in 1998. For those Mutter fans who have been to an ASM concert (as I have), the format is very similar to those concerts. Mutter stands on the right side of Orkis and piano, closer to the stage. They work together perfectly, the dialogue of music flows like a stream in spring.

Violin Anne-Sophie Mutter - Beethoven's Complete Violin Sonatas Media DVD Release 16 July, 2002 Count Price Label Availability Special Order Rating [1-5] The accompanying documentary, "A Life With Beethoven," should have been called "A Life With Anne-Sophie," since that's what it's really about. She uses the music of Beethoven as a backdrop, and she gives the usual platitudes about what a genius he was and how deep and complex his music is, but after that's out of the way it's all about her career. She offers not one insight into Beethoven or performing his music. And it's amusing to hear her repeated statements that her partnership with Orkis is one of equals when in the rehearsals she is clearly leading in everything. Reminded me of the press conference called after Damler/Benz swallowed up Chrysler, when Chrysler executives kept reiterating how it was a marriage of equals. I didn't believe it then and I don't now. (Incidentally, if you really believe Mutter and Orkis are equals, just note how large her name appears in the opening and closing credits vs. his!)

Extractions: Magnificat in D Major, BWV 243 Format: Video Record Label: Sony Catalog Number: Year Released/Recorded: Total Playing Time: Comments: Mike Flemmer said: Highly recommended! This video is 57 minutes of pure Bach joy from beginning to end. Karajan conducts and plays from the second harpsichord that is facing the orchestra and chorus. (Yes, there are two harpsichords in the center of the orchestra!) Karajan has not recorded very much Bach, but you wouldn't know it from this performance. This artistically magnificent live concert is a total success. It's a rare, top-notch live Bach concert from Karajan and company that is worth the purchase. All the musicians are superb. Karajan uses no baton and is very refrained. Liner notes are true: "with calm attentiveness...he allows the musicians to lead the way, visibly admiring their performances". It's a superb, non-HIP modern performance that has real moments of power, spirit and grace. Anne-Sophie Mutter has become a world-class recording artist and violinist. Here she is in one of her earlier performances, and she plays just as beautifully and intelligently then, as she does now. Her performance of Concerto No. 2 is everything I could ask. A bright, energetic, beautiful performance. Wonderful deep tones from the violin.
A Tale Of Two Prodigies By Jay Nordlinger and the bedazzling Hilary Hahn, who at only nineteen is already a deeply satisfyingviolinist. In this group, Joshua Bell and annesophie mutter seem senior http://www.newcriterion.com/archive/18/feb00/NORDLING.htm
Extractions: by Jay Nordlinger A s fate had it, the violinists Joshua Bell and Anne-Sophie Mutter gave recitals in New York on consecutive January nights. As fate has also had it, they are about the same age (Bell is thirty-two, Mutter thirty-six), they were famous as teenagers, and they have large and enthusiastic followings. They seem destined to be compared, or at least jointly discussed. cantabile Bell, who enjoyed superb training, has the unteachable: musical judgment, taste. The repertory of the violin is vast, and he can play all of it, with no specialty or deficiency. He recalls a violinist of a past generation, Zino Francescatti, the impeccable Frenchman with the lilting Italian name. Bell, like him, is something better than a violinist: He is a musician. He is also one of the most underrated performers, critically, before the public today, a condition that can hardly last forever. T The second half of the program opened with a work by George Crumb, his Four Nocturnes for Violin and Piano (Night Music II Tzigane Habanera , which she dispatched limply and indifferently.
Classical Beauties The response of more mainstream critics is more complicated. Concertviolinist annesophie mutter favors an off-the-shoulder look. http://arizonachambermusic.org/CB.htm
Extractions: The Arizona Daily Star OK, I'll admit it. Researching this piece on the Eroica Trio, which performs here Wednesday, leaves me puzzled. Were it not for the violin and cello, I might have mistaken the accompanying photo for a sexy fashion advertisement - not publicity material for a critically acclaimed piano trio that's performed in many of the world's concert halls. But this is the '90s. All-female chamber groups aren't all that rare anymore, and this one's not about to downplay what one critic has called its ``glamorous good looks.''
