Extractions: Full Review Wonderful musical moments like those in this boxed set are rare indeed. Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis are without a doubt the perfect duo to perform the greatest violin sonatas by the greatest composer in the history of music. Add that to a beautifully produced set of Deutsche Grammophon cds of the highest standards, and you have recordings that will be a centerpiece of any classical music collection. It is one of the centerpieces of my collection, which means a great deal since it has competition from over 3,500 other classical cds. Writing this review is actually more difficult than I considered it would be, as the main dilemma isnt what to write, but how much. You see, these recordings present the listener so much, that one could write about their offerings for a longer period than most Epinions members would care to read. Therefore, I have decided to discuss the recordings in broader terms, with some references to individual compositions.

Extractions: Violinists Here you can find some greatest violinists' biographies Gidon Kremer Gidon Kremer was born in Riga (Latvia) in 1947, the only child of parents of German origin. After receiving his first musical instruction at home - both father and grandfather were professional violinists - he studied at the Riga School of Music and then at the Moscow Conservatory under David Oistrakh. Kremer enjoyed notable success at competitions in Brussels (1967), Montreal and Genoa (1969), and Moscow (1970). The international chamber music festival in Lockenhaus (Austria), founded by Gidon Kremer in 1981, has been a forum for young artists to present challenging and innovative chamber music concerts - programmes which are also taken on tour. In 1992 the festival in Lockenhaus was named "KREMERata MUSICA". In 1996 Gidon Kremer founded the KREMERata BALTICA chamber orchestra to foster outstanding young musicians from the three Baltic states. He undertakes regular concert tours with this orchestra. Gidon Kremer is also Director of the Musiksommer Gstaad (Switzerland). Gidon Kremer's repertoire ranges from the Baroque to works by Henze and Stockhausen. Composers of the former Soviet Union such as Schnittke, Pärt, Gubaidulina and Denisov have been introduced to Western audiences largely through Kremer's efforts. Martha Argerich, Valery Afanassiev, Oleg Maisenberg and Vadim Sakharov are his favorite musical partners. Gidon Kremer plays a Guarneri del Gesù - ex David - dating from 1730.
Extractions: Mutter, unlike many, continues to take risks in her determination to continue growing as an artist. Her choices are intelligent and passionate. She is by far and away the strongest female violinist around and her playing has everything: technical prowess, fearlessness, and depth. Typically Masur plods along in his own tedious and oblivious germanic march, but here his work shows that he can be in touch and a true collaborator.
Extractions: Protege Anne-Sophie Mutter has made yet another excellent CD. The Mendelssohn concerto is truly one of the greatest concertos, and has been well met by Anne-Sophie Mutter. She has a very clear and pronounced style, that not only makes for an excellent piece to listen to, but would be a bonus for a student studying either of the concertos. I must say that this recording surely has something magic about it. But I wouldnt really go as far as the previous reviewer, to say its sexual - its far more than earthly pleasures - its ethereal. You can just sit back in your sofa, close your eyes and feel that theres something more than just the music you hear in this recording. Sensitive, intensitive, and sensual, sometimes on the border to vulnerability, is the playing from especially Ms Mutter. Karajan shows his great experience by not letting his own conducting catch too much of your attention - he is simply responsive and supportive to Ms Mutters young and fresh-sounding playing. Need I then say that this is beautiful? Happily, this is valid for both these lovely concertos.
Extractions: The multi-talented Andre Previn composed this three-movement concerto on commission from the Boston Symphony Orchestra for violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. The concerto was actually written during the months before the marriage of Mutter and Previn. It was premiered on March 14, 2002 at Symphony Hall, Boston. The composer's feelings and admiration for Mutter and the BSO come through in this expansively tuneful, warm music. The piece reflects Previn's early childhood memories of Germany, incorporating a German children's song in the third movement.
Extractions: Editorial Review: Mutter's command of an animated tone that pulsates with expressive purpose inspired the contemporary German composer Wolfgang Rihm to write the other work on this disc, Gesungene Zeit ("Time Chant"). It's a mesmerizing neoexpressionist poem of shimmering, elongated string lineslater punctuated with dire eruptions from full orchestrathat seem to form an ether over which the soloist floats. Any sense of time measured in bars becomes negated as Mutter intones Siren-like threads of sound in the highest register. As with the Penderecki Violin Concerto No. 2 and other contemporary works she champions, Mutter plays with a gripping immediacy that indeed makes Rihm's imaginative novelty seem tailor-made for her. Extractions: Chicago audiences have not lacked for chamber music from high-profile players in recent years. Daniel Barenboim, Chicago Symphony Orchestra music director and a stellar pianist, loves to play chamber music with his friends, and he has brought such top soloists as Pinchas Zukerman, Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman to Symphony Center to collaborate with him on memorable performances over the past decade. Often organized and rehearsed on the fly, those concerts by congenial colleagues enjoying one another's company can be exhilarating. But they are an entirely different kind of musicmaking from the copiously rehearsed, endlessly polished performances by ensembles like the Emerson or Juilliard quartets, whose members have been playing together for years. The Mutter-Previn-Harrell Trio, formed last year and making its Chicago debut Wednesday night in Symphony Center, falls somewhere in between. German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter is one of the finest soloists on the stage today and a devoted chamber musician, especially in violin sonata literature with her longtime pianist Lambert Orkis.

Extractions: On Wednesday the 7th of May 2003 we attended another concert at the Royal Festival Hall. It was wonderful and inspiring to hear Anne-Sophie Mutter so beautifully play my favourite instrument - the violin. Mr. Lambert accompanied Ms. Mutter on the piano. Upon arrival, I was curious about the dramatic difference between the single piano on the stage at this concert and the orchestra we had seen at the previous Royal Festival Hall concert. I enjoyed experiencing these two different types of concerts. Ms. Mutter and Mr. Lambert played a nice variety of recognizable pieces including some by Brahms and Gershwin. Unfortunately, due to my immense excitement and the beauty of the evening I was unable to remain awake for the entire second half of the concert. But I am sure that I did absorb it according to Suzuki principles. My brother Paul and my mum enjoyed the entire concert. I hope to hear Ms. Mutter play again soon. On two solo recitals and three programs with orchestra (each played twice), Mutter performed a total of sixteen scores, offering a veritable crash course in twentieth-century violin music. Such retrospectives have been cropping up everywhere as the new millennium dawns, but that hardly detracts from Mutter's enterprise, her stamina, and her technical excellence. Her programming was equally crafty, balancing such familiar nonthreatening classics as the Sibelius Concerto and Ravel's Tzigane with the newer, more challenging sounds of George Crumb's

Extractions: TICKETS: For centuries, the elixir of love has resulted in some of the most beautiful music ever written. Tchaikovsky's "Overture to Romeo and Juliet" could have been inspired by his ill-fated infatuation with French opera singer Desiree Artot. And wife Elvira Gemignani set Giacomo Puccini on the road to his soaring melodies. Now Sir Andre Previn and Anne-Sophie Mutter, protagonists in the upcoming Pittsburgh Symphony concert subtitled "Love Stories," are playing out their close personal connection on stage. Mutter will perform the violin concerto that Previn penned for her, which premiered with the Boston Symphony in March 2002, as part of their Heinz Hall appearance this weekend. But romance had nothing to do with it, the couple said in a telephone interview from their apartment on New York's Upper West Side. Indeed, according to the contentious Previn, the subtitle "Love Stories" is in "bad taste."

Unused to playing much contemporary music, the challenge and success of Lutoslawski's Chain 2 led to Anne Sophie Mutter's ongoing commitment to the music of her own time, and this series a decade later. So impressed was Lutoslawski (I have a video of him discussing Chain 2 with her) that he wrote Partita to follow, and subsequently orchestrated it. Subsequently Lutoslawski added an orchestral Interlude, and this is how we heard the music at The Barbican. The three works, joined together in this way, made a very satisfying first half of the concert. They were followed after the interval by a rare hearing of Leonard Bernstein's Serenade , composed in 1953 before Candide . Supplied with a complicated (and doubtfully relevant) Grecian scenario, which easily fills a page of programme notes, it is in effect a five movement concerto with (only slightly) reduced string orchestra plus percussion - six players, but used sparingly. Anne Sophie Mutter brought out its lyrical qualities and Bernstein had seen to it that she was never covered. Very much of its period, and not to everyone's taste, the
