Extractions: Nathan Milstein Ragin (RAH-gheen) Wenk-Wolff enjoys an extraordinary career. She began playing the violin at age 11, and started studies with her first professional teacher at age 13. Only one year later, at the age of 14, she performed Mozart's G Major Violin Concerto with her own cadenzas, and since then she has regularly been a soloist with all the Norwegian symphony orchestras, including the Oslo Philharmonic, the Bergen Symphony Orchestra, and the Norwegian Broadcast Orchestra. She received much acclaim for her performance with orchestra of the Vieuxtemps "Ballade & Polonaise" which was broadcast on Norwegian Television and BBC Radio 3 in England. Her remarkable playing and mature and moving interpretation of works such as Mozart's haunting Sinfonia Concertante instantly brought her to the forefront among Norwegian artists. At 17, she made her official debut in Oslo, which caused a sensation, and for which she won the Norwegian Debut Prize. In October 1984 she had her very successful London debut at the Purcell Room (South Bank) and the same month gave a recital in Paris in conjunction with an exhibition of her own drawings.

Extractions: The Violinist's Violinist Milstein was a contemporary of Jascha Heifetz, and, like Heifetz, was Russian-born, taught by Leopold Auer and emigrated to the USA. Though he had a phenomenal technique and a pure, lyrical, elegant musical style, he spent his career in the shadow of Heifetz's technical perfection. These recordings show him at his best. The remasterings are sonically excellent, and the quality of the sound holds its own against current standards (this is modern, not vintage, sound, despite the fact that some of the recordings are mono). Milstein's Dvorak and Glazunov concerto recordings , both part of this set, continue to be peerless. The Beethoven concerto has a gorgeous elegance, and the Brahms and the Tchaikovsky concertos are robust; this is perhaps the best of the multiple recordings of the Tchaikovsky that Milstein made during his career. The encores are also superb.

Along with the earlier Bridge recital, from 1946, Milstein is caught in his mature glory, inconsistent maybe in places, but always unignorable and a beacon of sanity, insight and command. Extractions: Two Milstein recitals from The Library of Congress have been issued by Bridge, documents of value and significance. This, the earlier, dates from 1946 and is a programme of the Old School with the Vitali Chaconne and a Milstein speciality, solo Bach, sharing space with a piano accompanied Mendelssohn Concerto and some scintillating morceaux. The later 1953 recital is a standard post-War Sonata programme Beethoven op 24 and Brahms op 108 along with the Bach Partita in D Minor. In a sense then this brace of recordings documents the changing patina of the violin recital as it moved from the predictable but still relatively elastic traditions of Baroque opener, Romantic Concerto and lighter sweetmeats to the heavyweight three Sonata line-up.

These four Cadenzas for Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Paganini concerti, however, have been carefully worked out and performed by the modern violinist Nathan Milstein. They are extremely challenging but avoid 'empty virtuosity' - they have real musical value, as one would expect from one of the finest Violinsts of the Twentieth Century. They can be used for performance or as a study aid to the art of Cadenza improvisation. All four Concertos have been recorded by Milstein.

Extractions: Fanfare : Sept/Oct 1997: Robert Maxham Violinist Henry Roth is of the opinion that Nathan Milstein was even more dazzling in live performance than he was in his recordings. The many live performances currently being released are proof that, like Heifetz and Perlman, Milstein could catch fire in front of an audience, although his fire burned with a different, more controlled kind of intensity than theirs. Henry Roth writes in his liner notes: "The Milstein public performance repertoire was neither as broad in scope nor as large in size as that of Heifetz, David Oistrakh, Menuhin, Stern, Szeryng, or Ricci...He insisted upon playing only those works for which he had affinity and affection, and was decidedly not a pioneer of new music. However, the continued repetition of his chosen repertory never resulted in a loss of freshness or inspiration, as he invariably sought and found new musical insights in those works, constantly modifying fingerings and bowings to suit his changing ideas."

Extractions: Full Review Long a champion for Bachs Sonatas and Partitas, it is no surprise for Nathan Milstein to record these works in its entirety. In fact, Milstein made two recordings of this collection in his career as a violinist, one in the 50s and another in the 70s. It is the first recording that this review concerns. (Note: I think that EMI decided to re-release the album done in the 50s. And as is often the case for re-releases, they digitally alter the recordings to improve acoustics, which is a good thing, in my opinion, since the sound becomes cleaner and more realistic.) To fully appreciate Bachs six Sonatas and Partitas, it is important to understand two things. One is that even though Bach is famous for his religious compositions, these Sonatas are serious works requiring true virtuosity as well as being a key factor in shaping the later forms of classical music. The other is Milsteins real understanding of these pieces. Milstein just about single-handedly brought Bachs Sonatas into popularity among violinists; in fact, he had such an admiration for Bach that he learned to play the first sonata in G minor in its entirety when he was merely a boy in Petersburg. It should not be shocking, then, to recognize his authority on these pieces.

Extractions: Home Contact us Search this site Chapter Twenty IT was a busy morning. I made telephone calls and wrote letters of apology, but it was like trying to mend the unmendable. Reciprocating the hospitality of many, I had arranged a dinner for forty many weeks in advance. Food and wine chosen, invitations sent out, caterers and help hired, I had marked the date on my calendar "At Home." Satisfied with my efficiency and feeling that I had been a good host already, I had left for a concert tour. Shortly after returning I saw "At Home" on the calendar and, delighted to be free, went in the early evening to see a murder movie featuring my friend Peter Lorre. I had a long walk after the show and a sandwich in a Bierstube . Content with the time so pleasantly spent, I unhurriedly approached the street in which I lived. It was a little after ten. The air was calm and there were lights in the windows, and what a joy it was to run so unexpectedly into a group of friends. "What are you doing in my neighborhood at this hour? How wonderful!" My jovial greeting had a somewhat subdued reception. A little later there were more acquaintances, and when I stopped to greet them I saw more coming toward me. "

In the Chaconne to the D minor Partitawhich can make even a very good violinist sound overmatched and inepthe zeroes in with the sort of concentration one usually sees in chess champions. Here, as elsewhere in the cycle, Milstein projects not only the music's emotive force, but Bach's grand architecture as well.
