Duff Berg Bows, Inc. was honored and very happy to exhibit six of our finest cello bows, crafted especially for the occasion, at the Indiana University Musical Arts Center during Maestro Janos Starker's 75th Birthday Celebration. Unlike other exhibitors, traveling to the "MAC" was not a problem since our studio is only one and one half mile from campus. To begin with, we are very gratified to be able to say that Mr. Starker has endorsed the Berg cello bows, having critiqued many. He has praised the great improvement in their performance quality over the years. This is in part due to following his advice on aspects important to him as a virtuoso, and mathematical studies on the design of the stick.

LAS VEGAS RJ: NEON: Boy Wonder Boy Wonder. Acclaimed violinist stefan milenkovich closes Las VegasPhilharmonic s season. By KEN WHITE REVIEWJOURNAL. violinist stefan http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2002/May-03-Fri-2002/weekly/18637907.html
Extractions: Violinist Stefan Milenkovich returns to Las Vegas as the featured soloist for the Las Vegas Philharmonic's season finale Saturday night in Artemus Ham Hall at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Milenkovich is no stranger to the Philharmonic. He has performed at two of the orchestra's soirees. "He just knocked everybody out," said Harold Weller, music director of the Philharmonic. "Instant standing ovation." Weller first heard of Milenkovich through friends in Flagstaff, Ariz., where Weller had been conductor. "They said, `You have to hire this kid for something.' He impressed us so much at the first soiree that we invited him back last year." Milenkovich will perform Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky's romantic Violin Concerto "It's a real tour de force," Weller said at Saturday's concert. Milenkovich gained recognition by winning the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1997. He also received the silver medal at the 1994 Indianapolis Violin Competition when he was 17.
Extractions: Choosing a season's worth of music to perform isn't an easy task, says Las Vegas Philharmonic artistic director Harold Weller. "It's really a protracted and agonizing process to balance styles in a program and to find the best guest artist to appear," says Weller, who also conducts the orchestra in all but one of its programs this season. In February, the Philharmonic audience members were surveyed for their input. About 700 surveys were returned and "one suggestion was to play more from the classic period. So our March concert" with works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Robert Schumann and Ludwig van Beethoven "is a direct result of that." Rosen won the 1977 International Naumburg Competition and the following year was the first American cellist to win the gold medal at the Tchaikovsky International Competition. He began studying the cello at 6 and at 13 began studying with famed cellist Gregor Piatigorsky.

Kenji Bunch, Composer Mr. Bunchs second commission, Paraphraseology, was premiered by marimbist MakotoNakura and violinist stefan milenkovich at Carnegies Weill Recital Hall http://www.yca.org/bunch.html
Extractions: KENJI BUNCH, composer "Kenji Bunch has had several arresting works performed in recent seasons. He is a composer to watch, and his new position as Young Concert Artists' Composer-in-Residence is likely to expand his presence. Mr. Bunch is also a violist, and his five movement Suite for Viola and Piano, composed for violist Naoko Shimizu, tests a player's limits. The dramatic writing of the opening Rhapsody gives way to a pizzicato section full of character and melody. A graceful Lament that explores a broad timbral palette becomes an extended Cadenza, which in turn expands into a vigorous, virtuosic perpetual-motion finale." "Kenji Bunch was introduced to Washington music lovers on Monday evening at the Kennedy Center. His Suite for Viola and Piano was given a dazzling world premiere by violist Naoko Shimizu and pianist Ozgur Aydin. On the evidence of this concert, presented by Young Concert Artists to open its 20th-anniversary season of Terrace Theater concerts,Bunch is on the brink of a distinguished career. He has been appointed YCA's composer-in-residence and has already garnered many commissions elsewhere. The style of the suite's five short, well-contrasted movements is clearly modern but deeply respectful of tradition and instantly enjoyable. Kenji Bunch has a Juilliard master's degree in the instrument and composes with firsthand knowledge of the viola's personality its unique sound, its communicative potentials, its grace, agility and dynamic subtleties."
