Extractions: Midori fell in love with the violin at the early age of 3 and immediately began taking lessons. She studied and practiced daily with her mother, an accomplished violinist, and at the young age of six she made her concert debut in her native Osaka, Japan. It was a mere three years later that she performed before the renowned Julliard teacher Dorothy DeLay and was invited to study at the Julliard School in New York. Midori and Setsu left for New York in 1982 and that same year Midori was the surprise performer at the New York Philharmonic's New Year's Eve concert. The Stradivari Society loaned the ex-David, Guarneri del Gesu violin to Midori when she was 10 years old, making her the first violinist loaned a prestigious instrument from the society. Upon graduating to the full-size violin, Midori placed her ¾ size violin into The Stradivari Society collection for loan to another young talent, making her the first artist to support them in the use of one of her own instruments. The New York Times recognized the 14-year-old Midori on the front page after her inspirational interpretation of Leonard Bernstein's Serenade during a New York Philharmonic Central Park concert, despite her breaking strings on several violins during the performance.

For years, the phrase, "Really, she's the next Midori!" was a kind of mantra among music teachers. The Midori phenomenon was pushed up a notch in 1986 when she broke not one, but two violin strings during a performance with the Boston Symphony at the Tanglewood Music Center, under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. Calm and composed through it all, Midori ended up playing three different violins in that one piece of music, never making a single mistake. It was a nice mix of warmth and vitality. However, I was surprised that she dampened the second note of the first long solo passage more than is customary while the remainder of the upward-thrusting octaves was performed with the usual intensity and drama. This stylistic move had little impact on the overall performance and only roused my curiosity. Afterwards, she embraced the music, playing with a lot of verve and lightness of touch. Throughout the first movement, I could hear the dazzling melodies from Midori's violin weaving its way through the layers of music. The magnificent scoring of the piece includes extensive interchanges in which the soloist and the orchestra actually take turns playing the background and the foreground so that the entire piece is like a musical dialogue between instruments. The exquisite harmony and the mesmerizing solo parts make the Mendelssohn concerto a musical fantasy and masterpiece.
