Extractions: With the passing of violinist Yehudi Menuhin, at the age of eighty-two, on March 12,1999, the world lost one of its truly gifted musicians. Primarily associated with classical music, Menuhin consistently sought diverse forums for his virtuosic playing. His collaboration with Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar resulted in two groundbreaking albums East Meets West and In Celebration, while, his pairing with French violinist Stephane Grappelli Isaac Stern , Menuhin was 'an extraordinary musician and a great humanitarian. His style of playing, particularly in his early years, was a stunning patrician elegance with a very natural musical line.' Menuhin displayed a talent from music at a very young age. Starting to play the violin at the age of four, he made his professional debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra three years later. His performance of Beethoven's 'Violin Concerto' at Carnegie Hall, in 1927, sparked international acclaim. Menuhin's debut album, recorded at the age of sixteen, received the prestigious Prix du Disque in France. The oldest child of Russian-Jewish immigrants Moshe and Marutha Menuhin, Menuhin was still a baby when he moved with his family to San Francisco. A student of Louis Persinger, concertmaster of the an Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Menuhin advanced quickly on a violin. When Persinger moved to New York, in 1925, Menuhin and his family followed.
Extractions: Yehudi Menuhin In 1947 the first concert film in film history, CONCERT MAGIC, was produced with Yehudi Menuhin and other musicians. When the film was presented in the movie theatres for the first time in 1948 the audience reacted enthusiastically. Almost after every title it applauded as if being in a concert hall. At the end of the film, when the projectionist showed encores the audience's enthusiasm was boundless. For the first time Yehudi Menuhin recorded in CONCERT MAGIC the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto and other titles, of which it was hitherto unknown to music research that Yehudi Menuhin ever recorded them. With THE VOICE OF THE VIOLIN something was achieved that can be described as unique in music history. More than 50 years later Lord Yehudi Menuhin and Humphrey Burton - the renowned film director of all Leonard Bernstein films and Menuhin expert are watching the film CONCERT MAGIC . Visibly moved Yehudi Menuhin comments on his technique, remembers why he chose these specific titles, talks about composers and the times, when the film was shot. VHS-video tape, approx. 120 min.

Extractions: Previous Great news about how well Lauren Lee is doing November 13, Prog, trad and choice in the early education of Yehudi Menuhin I've been reading the autobiography of the late Yehudi Menuhin, Unfinished Journey . He was not only was he a great musician and a most intriguing human being, but he also wrote beautifully, it would seem. The education of someone like the young Menuhin was bound to be interesting, and so it proved. The first thing to be said is that almost from the word go, Menuhin himself was determined to become a violinist. He wasn't pushed into it, still less forced into it, by ambitious parents, although once he had embarked on his course his father and mother ("Aba" and "Imma") backed him to the hilt. No, what happened was that Menuhin saw and heard a violinist in a circus, by the name of Carichiarto. And he saw and heard the "concert master" (that's what they call the leader over there) of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, a man named Louis Persinger. The finger I pointed at Louis Persinger could base its choice on four years that had given me what as many years of college rarely give the graduate: a sense of vocation.

New Product Review - Violin - Yehudi Menuhin If you re looking for a video of menuhin with any never more than a few seconds of yehudi in performance documentary on the life of this great violinist you ll http://www.npreview.info/DVD/Musicals-and-Performing-Arts/Classical/Violin/Yehud
Extractions: Comment : If you're looking for a video of Menuhin with any substantial amount of performance footage you'll be very disappointed in this video. Theres never more than a few seconds of Yehudi in performance. If you're looking for an in depth documentary on the life of this great violinist you'll also be sorely disappointed. There is no continuity and flow to the video. Yehudi's life story isn't really told in a cohesive and compelling way. It left me feeling as if I just saw a mish mash of music snippets with rambling commentary interspersed in between (or more accurately visversa) with no real sense of the whole story. I'd recommend the video "The Art of the Violin" as a far better produced alternative. Rating: 5 of 5
