Choice Classical CDs 2003 that demand the utmost virtuosity from the violinist, this new CD chamber collaborationshave included partnerships with violinists kyung sun lee and Nicholas http://www.angelfire.com/music4/mclub/clcd03.html
Extractions: Classical: Instrumental Violinist Nikolaj Znaider¹s second CD as an exclusive RCA Red Seal recording artist. Mr. Znaider calls the CD Bravo! Virtuoso and Romantic Encores for Violin More than merely a compilation of encore works that demand the utmost virtuosity from the violinist, this new CD Bravo! Virtuoso and Romantic Encores for Violin traces the historical legacy and the subtle cross-influences of legendary violinists of the past, many of whom wrote works for the violin. Several of these pieces refer to the style of other violin virtuosos while pushing the instrument to the extremes of technique. For example, Fritz Kreisler, in his Recitativo and Scherzo Caprice, pays homage to Eugène Ysaÿe, whose distinct style and influence can be heard in the orations and rich chordal outbursts. Mr. Znaider is accompanied by pianist Daniel Gortler. Israeli pianist Daniel Gortler started his piano studies with Naomi Hacohen. He graduated from the Rubin Music Academy in Tel-Aviv and later from the Musikhochschule in Hanover, where he studied with Professor Arie Vardi. In addition, he has taken classes with Christoph Eschenbach. Daniel Gortler has won many competitions, including first prizes in both the Viña del Mar International Competition in Chile (1987) and the Bremen International Piano Competition (1991), second prize at the Munich International Piano Competition, and, when he was only 19 years old, third prize at the Geneva International Piano Competition. He has also won the Gina Bachauer Award in Jerusalem (1989) and the Salon de Virtuosi annual award in New-York. Daniel Gortler is a faculty member of the Rubin Music Academy at Tel-Aviv University.

Extractions: Excerpted from Strings magazine, July 2000, No. 87 Mexican cellist Carlos Prieto. On Stage Potpourri By Edith Eisler The millennial spring season was a heady mix of old and new music and established and aspiring performers, including some very promising debuts. Taiwanese cellist Kenneth Kuo made his New York recital debut at Weill Hall, partnered by the fine pianist Noreen Cassidy-Polera. Kua is an excellent player, with an effortless technique, a beautiful, warm tone, and an unabashedly romantic soul; his love for the music infused every note. The Rachmaninov Sonata was flexible but steady, expressive but not effusive; Schumanns Adagio and Allegro was less restrained but too honestly felt to seem excessive. Kuo performed his own virtuosic arrangement of Chopins Introduction et Polonaise brilliante and also played his own transcriptions of three Taiwanese folksongs. In Bachs C-Major Adagio, his expressiveness almost redeemed his romantic approach. The distinguished Mexican cellist Carlos Prieto returned to Alice Tully Hall with his splendid pianist Edison Quintana for a program featuring South American works, two of them New York premieres: Revueltas

Extractions: CJ's support is aimed at developing the orchestra into a performing group widely recognized at home and abroad. Thanks to CJ's efforts, the orchestra presented three regular concerts each year in South Korea and received an invitation to perform at the Krzysztof Penderecki Festival (Poland, 1998), the opening concert of the "Japanese Art Festival" held by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs (Japan, 2001), and the Thai International Music Festival; thus reinforcing its reputation as a musical group representing South Korea. Organized in 1996, the Hwaum Chamber Orchestra traces its roots to the "Chamber Orchestra Hwaum," which played chamber music in galleries monthly. When one hears the word Hwaum ûúëå (Chinese characters pronounced as hwaum), one usually thinks of harmony. Nonetheless, different Chinese characters (ûþëå, a homonym meaning picture and music) are used to denote the name of the orchestra. Its name is very meaningful and interesting because it suggests that music is heard in pictures, and pictures are shown in music. Likewise, it expresses its ideal, i.e., music is the reflection of the soul. The Hwaum Chamber Orchestra consists of 19 stringed instrument musicians who perform without a conductor. As outstanding musicians who are very active on the Korean and world stage as performers and professors, all orchestra members won prizes in prestigious domestic and foreign competitions. They include Ik-hwan Bae, a violinist and professor at the Indiana University School of Music, USA, Young-Chang Cho, a cellist and professor at Folkwang Hochschule Essen, Germany, Rainer Moog, a violinist and professor at Hochschule fur Musik Koeln, Germany, Michinori Bunya, a bassist and professor at Hochschule fur Musik Wurzburg, and Kyung-Sun Lee, a violinist. All of them collectively contribute to the musical prowess of the group as an international chamber orchestra.

Extractions: published February 7, 2002 Artur Girsky, principal second violin of the Florida Orchestra, and pianist Eugenia Pilyavina play music of Beethoven, Franck and Sarasate in St. Petersburg. Girsky, who joined the orchestra in November, graduated from the Moscow Conservatory. From 1993 to 1997, he was concertmaster of the Moscow Soloist Chamber Orchestra under Yuri Bashmet. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Palladium. Tickets: $8-$15. (727) 822-3590. It's not farfetched to think of Roger Miller as the George Gershwin of country music, a brilliant songwriter who died too young. Miller wrote a truckload of songs for other performers and had a string of his own hits, including Dang Me, Chug-A-Lug and King of the Road, in the 1960s. When Miller turned to the Broadway musical he was a breath of fresh air for a floundering art form. His Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn garnered seven Tony Awards after it opened in 1985, but it was the only musical written by Miller, who died at 56 in 1992.

Extractions: Homecoming weekend will focus on tradition this year as the University celebrates 100 years of Clemson football. The 1996 edition of Tigerama will borrow the theme "A Rock Solid Tradition for 100 Years" from the Football Centennial for the annual homecoming extravaganza to be held Friday, Oct. 18, in Memorial Stadium. A 7 p.m. pep rally will be followed at 7:30 p.m. by skits, based on Clemson's history, performed by student organizations, the crowning of Miss Homecoming, a performance by the Dixie skydivers and a gigantic fireworks display. Tickets are $2 in advance and $3 at the gate. Advance tickets are available on the University Union loggia and at the Alumni Center, Schilletter Dining Hall and area businesses. Public appearances by teams of matched Clydesdale horses have been a tradition of Anheuser-Busch for 63 years. An eight-horse hitch of the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales (above) will be on campus Saturday, Oct. 19, before the noon game. Beginning at approximately 9 a.m., the horses can be seen at a staging area on the practice field near Jervey Athletic Center and parading around the vicinity of Memorial Stadium. Just prior to the pre-game activities on the field, the Clydesdales will circle Fike Recreation Center (G Street to Williamson Road to Heisman Street, past the motor pool) and join the Tiger Band on Fort Hill Street for a festive march to the stadium. To qualify for one of three traveling hitches, these bay geldings must stand six feet at the shoulder, weigh between 1,800 and 2,300 pounds and have four white stocking feet, a blaze of white on the face and a black mane and tail. The hitches make more than 600 appearances each year from thousands of invitations. Their Upstate visit, including appearances Oct. 13 at the Anderson Speedway, Oct. 17 in downtown Greenville and Oct. 18 at Oktoberfest in Walhalla, was arranged by Rodney Williams of Budweiser of Anderson and by Budweiser of Greenville. Williams was the Tigers' starting quarterback in 1985-88 and now provides color commentary for the Clemson Sports Network radio broadcasts.
