Extractions: Miriam Kramer Born in Connecticut, though now living in London, violinist, Miriam Kramer won the United Kingdom's Jewish Performer of the Year 1995. Her grandfather was a Cantor and two of her uncles were concert violinists. Coupling these musical genes with the encouragement of violinist, Henryk Szeryng, who straightaway recognized her talent, she began her studies at the age of four. Three years later, she gave her first public performance of the Mozart G. Major Concerto. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music where she was awarded the Performers Certificate for Exceptional Young Artists, she studied violin with Charles Castleman and chamber music with Zvi Zeitlin. In the United Kingdom, she studied with Yfrah Neaman on the Advanced Solo Studies Course at the Guildhall School and was awarded the premier prix. In addition, she won three First Prizes including the Concerto Prize for her performance of the Sibelius Concerto. She went on to win the National Federation of Music Clubs First Prize, the Stillman Kelley Prize and the Artists International Young Artist award. Miriam records for Naxos and ASV and her recordings have received numerous awards. In November 1999, her disc of the music of Josef Achron was released. It is the first full recording of this Lithuanian-American composer's works since the days of Jascha Heifetz. In February of this year, Naxos released her disc of the violin and piano works of Ernest Bloch. It contains several rarely performed pieces.

Through their efforts, a generation of musical innovation and promise was not only abruptly curtailed in Europe, but excluded from its rightful status in history. What should have been the dawning of a thrilling new phase of musical evolution, instead fell silent under the dark shadows of the swastika. The Music Suppressed by the Third Reich International Conference will feature a gathering of international scholars and musicians to lead seminars and give performances on the grounds of the University of Virginia on March 23 through 25.

Look, for example, at that Early Music Now lineup, with three of the hottest new-music attractions in the world. The rival Historical Keyboard Society is offering an intriguing, concentrated week of Bach that is loaded with leading scholars-performers. At the other end of the historical spectrum, Present Music's U.S. premiere of a John Adams piece co-commissioned with the London Sinfonietta will attract the attention of the wider musical world. In late March, we'll get another preview of Andreas Delfs, who will take over as the Milwaukee Symphony's music director in the fall. The "Rainforest" theme concert, with resident conductor Neal Gittleman, looks interesting, too; it will, at the very least, be nice to hear Roberto Sierra's shimmering "Tropicalia" again. We also anticipate the Skylight Opera Theatre's upcoming production of Mozart's "Cosi Fan Tutte," by the same creative team that made such a smashing "Marriage of Figaro" in the fall of '95. And don't overlook the Florentine Opera production of Giordano's "Andrea Chenier," which, incredibly, seems to be a Milwaukee premiere.
