Extractions: 6 NOVEMBER 2003 Nigel Kennedy performs two NZ concerts Nigel Kennedy, Britains greatest living violinist, visits New Zealand in December to perform two concerts on Monday 15 December in Wellington, and Tuesday 16 December in Auckland. For the first time since his worldwide multi-platinum success with Vivaldis Four Seasons more than a decade ago (becoming the highest selling classical disc of all time), Nigel Kennedy returns to Vivaldi to perform his new interpretation of the Four Seasons as well as the haunting Concerto in A minor for Two Violins and the late and rarely heard Double Concerto in D. The concerts, which are sponsored by Mazda in association with the Lion Foundation and EMI, feature Nigel Kennedy accompanied by members of the Auckland Philharmonia, with guest artists Cora Venus Lunny (2nd Violin Soloist), Taro Takeuchi (Baroque Guitar and Lute) and Bogumila Gizbert-Studnicka (Harpsichord). From shattering intensity, bold and exhilarating to a violinist in a million critics have always been extravagant in the language they use to describe the effect the playing of virtuoso violinist Nigel Kennedy has on audiences. In the classical field, he has produced best-selling versions of concertos by Elgar, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Beethoven, and his 1989 recording of Vivaldis Four Seasons stimulated the entire British classical market by over 25%. His concerts throughout the world are always sell-outs, and his countless awards and gold discs confirm his status as one of the most important and influential musicians Britain has ever produced.

Programming In The 21st Century British violinist nigel kennedy has been a jazz enthusiast for yearsand often includes jazz standards on his concert programs. http://farben.latrobe.edu.au/mikropol/volume7/carlson_a/carlson_a.html
Extractions: Mikropolyphonie - The Online Contemporary Music Journal, Volume 7, 2001 Programming in the 21 st Century By Andrew Carlson , D.M.A. Assistant Professor of Music Denison University To most classically trained musicians, a mixed recital program would include western European Art music from a variety of historical periods arranged chronologically in order from oldest to most recent. For instance, a typical violin recital presented at a university might possibly include some Bach, some Mozart or Beethoven, some Brahms, and perhaps a selection from the 20 th century (probably written no later than 1945). By most musicological standards, this would be considered an acceptable program with great variety. As the 21 st century unfolds, I believe that the mixed recital program will be expanded to include musics from outside the realm of Art music. This will challenge the 21 st century musician to become fluent in a variety of musical languages (classical, folk, jazz, blues, etc.) and to select repertoire that will combine to provide the audience with a musically satisfying event. In recent years, soloists throughout the world have begun to mix genres and styles within a single program. To help predict the future of recital programming, both current trends and historical attitudes must be examined. The current model of a musicologically correct recital has certainly not always been the standard. Musicians of the past were generally allowed greater freedom both in constructing programs and in the manner of their performance. Arguably the most serious composer of classical music, Beethoven would regularly include improvisations based on popular and folk themes in his performances
Extractions: Home Concerto Nigel Kennedy / BPO Artist: Nigel Kennedy / BPO Album: Kennedy plays Bach Cat. #: Discs: Label: EMI Classics Usually ships: 2 - 4 days Normally: NZD OpusCDs Price: NZD Qty: For nearly twenty years, Kennedy has been acknowledged as one of the world's leading violin virtuosos and is, without doubt, one of the most important violinists Britain has ever produced. His virtuosic technique, unique talent and popular appeal have brought fresh perspectives to both the classical and contemporary repertoire. We associate Kennedy with Bach as often as we see him with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, but here he is with both, and he is found at his most urgently charismatic, backed by the superb strings of the BPO. Kennedy has a positive, often robust view of Bach, and approaches the finales at breathtakingly fast speeds. He has clearly undertaken some meticulous research as his playing reveals a scrupulous attention to details that are often glossed over.

Classic Kennedy At Edifying Spectacle A while back I had heard about a British violin soloist named nigel kennedy, who was working on transcribing songs by Jimi Hendrix for the violin. http://edifyingspectacle.org/thanks/asinsearch_B000026D4B/
Extractions: Editorial Review: Just in case you thought Nigel Kennedyfresh from his Hendrix tribute albumhad left the classical music repertoire for good, think again. On Classic Kennedy , the fiddler is situated with the English Chamber Orchestra in a program that spans from Bach to Satie. (Yes, you also get a Joni Mitchell tune; "Scarborough Fair"; and the fiddler's own forgettable "Melody in the Wind," too.) The sequencing is a bit disjointedthe summer storm from The Four Seasons is followed by Massenet's blissful "Meditation" from and Kennedy's performances range from good to fair. The English Chamber Orchestra does an admirable job on these diverse works (it deserves a lot of credit here), but it'll be up to the listener to decide whether he or she wants to hear "Air on the G String" followed by Kennedy's version of "Danny Boy." As with most Kennedy discs, you'll either love it or hate it.

The Lark Ascending his Four Seasons , rather fiercely played and recorded, bracket the program. Extractions: "Structures, not strictures" is Kennedy's description of the unusual Cornell Concert Series program he will present Monday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m. in Bailey Hall. Juxtaposing works by Bach, Bartok and his own arrangement of songs by rock icon Jimi Hendrix, the British violinist with the single moniker will perform both as soloist and with the "Kennedy Collective," an ensemble comprising two guitarists, two cellists, double bass, flute and oboe. "As is the case with most musicians' recitals, I have chosen works which inspire me," notes Kennedy, "and I hope, mainly through my interpretations, but also because of the context in which I have placed all these works, to be able to shed new light on them. This is, after all, surely the function of an interpreting artist." Tickets for the concert at $25, $22, $19 and $16 for the general public and $15, $13, $11.50 and $9.50 for students and are on sale at the Lincoln Hall Box Office, 105 Lincoln Hall, 255-5144.
