Extractions: Edward Elgar Elgar is generally considered England's greatest native-born composer since Henry Purcell. He received his early musical training from his father, a music seller, violinist, and organist of St. George's Roman Catholic church in Worcester. In 1879 he had a few violin lessons in London, but as a composer Elgar was self-taught. In 1885, he succeeded his father as church organist in Worcester and pursued a minor local career, teaching, conducting, and composing. In 1889 he married his student and admirer, Caroline Alice Roberts, whose love and encouragement transformed him; their marriage of three decades coincided with the most creative period of Elgar's life. He became a close friend of the organist of Hereford Cathedral, Dr G R Sinclair, to whom the Te Deum and Benedictus Elgar's association with the Three Choirs Festival began in Worcester in 1878 when he played with the second violins in the Festival Orchestra. In 1881 he was promoted to the first violins. Later he was able to scribble on his Festival Programme, "I played first violin for the sake of the fee as I could obtain no recognition as a composer". In 1899 the Enigma Variations established Elgar as the leading English composer of the day. In 1904, Elgar took up residence at Plas Gwyn, in Hereford, where he composed many of his greatest works, including both

After teaching strings for four years in Fairfax County Virginia, she left to earn her Masters in Violin Performance at West Virginia University. She then moved to the Southern Tier of New York where she first taught strings in the Bainbridge-Guilford Schools, and is now working with students in the Union-Endicott Central School District. She resides in Vestal with her two cats and enjoys teaching and performing throughout the area. Mary Anne shared her many challenges of last year, including the death of an aunt, Ed learning to cook, the renovation of their kitchen, and various home improvement problems. They traveled to Hilton Head and planned a trip to Arizona this spring. Bob and Edie Talbot Jolly report three highlights in 2002: the class reunion, of course; a Baltic cruise; and a big family gathering on the Outer Banks of North Carolina with all of the grandchildren. The Jollys continue to sing in the church choir and do volunteer work.
