Extractions: World-class violinist Dylana Jenson and her husband, Grand Rapids Symphony conductor David Lockington, cello, will make their first appearance at the Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck during the second week of this summer's concert series. Lockington and Jenson will join frequent festival contributors Robert Byrnes, piano, and Joan Conway, piano, for performances of music by Frank Bridge, Claude Debussy and Johannes Brahms at the Woman's Club of Saugatuck at 8 p.m. tonight and Friday. A native of Great Britain, David Lockington completed his bachelor of aArts degree at the University of Cambridge and received his master's degree in cello performance from Yale University. Lockington has been music director of the Grand Rapids Symphony since January 1999; the long list of orchestras for which he has held the same position includes the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, the Denver Young Artists' Orchestra, the Boulder Bach Festival, the Ohio Chamber Orchestra, and New Mexico Symphony, and the Long Island Philharmonic. By the age of 13, Jenson has performed with most major orchestras in the United States and traveled to Europe and Latin America for concerts, recitals, and recordings. Jenson has toured Australia and Japan and was made an Honorary Citizen of Costa Rica for her artistic contribution to that country. Her recent performances have included Louisiana Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony, the New Mexico Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, and the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra. She is currently distinguished professor of music at Grand Valley State University.
Extractions: Hope College Theatre will present the first play of its fall season at 8 p.m. tonight with a production of "A Piece of My Heart," by Shirley Lauro. The play is a drama about six women who served in Vietnam. The production will be presented in the studio theatre of the DeWitt Center, located on Columbia Avenue at 12th Street. There will also be performances on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 18-19; and Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27-28. Curtain time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $7, with a special price of $4 for senior citizens and students. Reservations may be made by calling the theatre lobby ticket office at 395-7890. The play is based on Keith Walker's book of the same title, which contains the stories of 26 women who served in Vietnam. The dramatic version focuses on how four nurses, a Red Cross worker and a country-western singer came to serve in the war-torn country. The play portrays each young woman before, during and after her tour in the Vietnamese jungle, and ends as each leaves a personal token at the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. According to John Tammi, professor of theatre and director of the production, while "A Piece of My Heart" was chosen for the current season because it offers solid roles for women actors to tackle, it has grown to be much more than simply another theater production.

Extractions: Ormandy, Eugene (18 Nov. 1899-12 Mar. 1985) In 1922 Ormandy married harpist Stephanie Goldner; they divorced in 1947. In 1926 he became an American citizenexactly five years and ninety days after his arrival, the minimum waiting time. His love for America was instant and lasting; he once remarked in an interview that he "was born in New York City at the age of twenty-two." It was at the Capitol Theatre that Ormandy revealed a talent for conducting when he filled in at the last minute for the regular conductor who was ill. Finding himself a better conductor than violinist, and desiring the additional $25 that came with the job, Ormandy chose to become the orchestra's conductor. This decision would change the course of his life. His conducting career took off after famed impresario Arthur Judson attended a dance recital at the Capitol and became enthralled with Ormandy's vigorous conducting. Under Judson's management, Ormandy became a conductor with the CBS radio network. In 1931 he began his association with the Philadelphia Orchestra after Judson booked him as a last-minute replacement for Arturo Toscanini , who was incapacitated by bursitis. To the audience's surprise, the unknown conductor more than filled the legendary Italian's shoes. This exposure led to an invitation to conduct the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in 1931, replacing the ailing Henri Verbrugghen.
