Extractions: We were in Savannah, GeorgiaâMelissa, young Tom Clark, and I, in the fall of 1998. Taking the opportunity for southern travel while at a conference in Hilton Head, South Carolina, we drove the Beemer across the border into this famous city that I, at least, had never visited. It was a glorious evening, even a little cool if I remember correctly, and we drove around a bit before stopping at the tourist-influenced waterfront commercial area. I remember a taffy (or perhaps it was fudge) factory, and some other interesting places, but the one of most interest to me was a gourmet food shop that specialized in hot sauces. Always disappointed in the degree of fire in foods I eat in restaurants (with one exception), I was in the market for a nice hot sauce to spice up normal fare.

Extractions: Our disparate arts world needs to learn what community really means MARTY RONISH "Albuquerque is a place of great opportunity for artists because our arts community is so disorganized." That is how I started a speech to assembled arts leaders at last spring's Arts Alliance Bravo Awards. There were audible gasps and frowns of disapproval from these people who devote their lives to organizing. I went on to soften the blow by saying we have no "establishment" to overcome, no entrenched power bloc. Arts groups have equal access to the press and to funding sources. Anyone can start an arts organization in Albuquerque with good chance for success. That's the upside of being disorganized. The downside of being disorganized is that the arts organizations have very little clout in the community, because they are not collaborative. We failed to save music and art in our elementary schools 10 years ago, we were spectacularly unsuccessful at getting community approval for a desperately needed Performing Arts Center, and the city's support for the arts is at the poverty level. What we learned from Sept. 11 is how important "community" is. Building community is a process that starts with cooperation and collaboration.
