Extractions: Violins and talent were in abundance at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Friday, as the Miami String Quartet and Judith Ingolfsson offered a variety of classical works for strings. The violins weren't alone. There was a cello in the quartet, and Ingolfsson performs with her accompanying pianist (and husband) Ronald Sat. Combined, they provided a quality evening though it could have used a bit more emotion. All of the performers are extremely competent and show potential to continue solid careers. They are all good and perhaps, with more years of performance, will become even better. The quartet Ivan Chan, Cathy Meng Robinson, Chauncey Patterson and Keith Robinson have performed together for more than a decade and toured throughout the United States and Europe. They have played numerous commissions and premieres, and all four become faculty members of Ohio's Kent State University next fall. The evening opened with the String Quartet and Ludwig von Beethoven's String Quartet in F. Minor, Op. 95. First performed in 1814, it quickly allowed the four musicians to establish their strength and sound. It showcased a sequence of emotion before an enthusiastic end.

This unique pairing of Simon's plays will alternate every other performance between the men (Oscar and Felix) and the women (Olive and Florence). June 4-27, Friday-Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Saturdays-Sundays at 2:30 p.m. $12; students and seniors $10. (with material contributed by Cathy Strauss) For the arts world, "the Indianapolis" is almost the equal of the "500" in the sports world. A plethora of performances, big prizes and a festival atmosphere characterize the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis (IVCI) every fourth September. "The ultimate violin contest Ö" writes the Chicago Tribune. Many laureates of "the Indianapolis" have emerged as outstanding artists in concert halls around the world. Though possibly a bit ironic, it is also predictable that the greatest successes have not always gone to the gold medalists - anymore than the "500" winners have always proven the best racers. Extractions: CLICK HERE FOR SPRING 2002 NEWSLETTER Welcome to a new school year with the James Madison University School of Music! As the season begins, we are happy to share highlights of the past months with our alumni, parents and friends. The spring semester of the 2001_2002 academic year proved to be one of our busiest seasons in recent memory. This edition of Rhapsody only touches upon a few of the numerous and varied endeavors upon which we have embarked. These snapshots include some fresh approaches to the education of our students brought to us by the seven new faculty members who joined us last season. Throughout the academic year, the faculty, staff and students investigated new ideas for various aspects of our programs. The result was an exciting time on campus as well as throughout Virginia and this entire region. After you have read the articles and the student and faculty highlights, I invite you to visit our newly constructed Web site at www.jmu.edu/music. The site received extensive upgrades at the beginning of the spring semester and has been undergoing regular fine-tuning. Since we value the opinion of our supporters, it would be great hearing your reaction to this important means of communicating with our friends, alumni and prospective students.

Extractions: SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER MUSIC CRITIC Although the brilliant Brazilian musician has not lived in Seattle since he was named principal oboe with the Chicago Symphony in 1995, Alex Klein has maintained his presence in the city during the past few years with chamber music and solo performances. Earlier this month he announced his resignation from the Chicago Symphony as of July 4 because he is suffering from focal dystonia. He has been on leave since January. Focal dystonia is a neurological disorder in which the brain sends messages through the nervous system that cause muscles in certain parts of the body to contract and curl up involuntarily. With Klein, the third and fourth fingers of his left hand were affected. This is the same condition that stopped the careers of pianists Leon Fleisher and Gary Graffman in their prime, also in their left hands, and affects as many as 10,000 other professional musicians. Speaking from Brazil to the Chicago Tribune, he said, "I am extremely sad to leave the CSO and Chicago. I love everyone there and admire them more than they will ever know. I didn't see my position as something I could maintain marginally. The CSO deserves a first-chair player it can count on."
