As the season begins, we are happy to share highlights of the past months with our alumni, parents and friends. The spring semester of the 2001_2002 academic year proved to be one of our busiest seasons in recent memory. This edition of Rhapsody only touches upon a few of the numerous and varied endeavors upon which we have embarked. These snapshots include some fresh approaches to the education of our students brought to us by the seven new faculty members who joined us last season. Throughout the academic year, the faculty, staff and students investigated new ideas for various aspects of our programs. The result was an exciting time on campus as well as throughout Virginia and this entire region. After you have read the articles and the student and faculty highlights, I invite you to visit our newly constructed Web site at www.jmu.edu/music. The site received extensive upgrades at the beginning of the spring semester and has been undergoing regular fine-tuning. Since we value the opinion of our supporters, it would be great hearing your reaction to this important means of communicating with our friends, alumni and prospective students.

Artsandentertainment: Symphony's Premiere Sets Quantum Theory To Music Brahms Double Concerto, taking up the second half of the program, was a family affair, with violinist susanna henkel and her father, cellist Christoph henkel http://www.sptimes.com/News/121000/news_pf/Artsandentertainment/Symphony_s_premi
Extractions: Weather Sports Forums Comics ... Movies By JOHN FLEMING SARASOTA For better or worse, reaction to David Carlson's first symphony will depend on reaction to the effect from which it draws its title, Quantumsymphony. The three-movement work, lasting about half an hour, was premiered Friday night by Florida West Coast Symphony, artistic director Leif Bjaland conducting, at Van Wezel Hall. At the center of the slow middle movement is a simple melody in the strings that was recorded by the orchestra and played back on tape during the performance. It's a fragment Carlson wrote when he was 15 he's now 48 and is meant to exemplify a tenet of quantum mechanics. "Quantum theory asks us to accept the possibility that time is not statistical or linear," the composer wrote in a program note, explaining that juxtaposing the music of his youth on tape with the music of his maturity played live was a way to express how the past and the present can exist simultaneously in the mind. The effect was evocative, and it was hard to tell what was recorded and what was live, but it also didn't seem to matter which was which. Is the prerecorded music necessary, or could the passage just be played live?

Extractions: Times Jobs Contact us By JOHN FLEMING In classical music, 2000 was marked by celebrations of a matched set of baroque and 20th century composers. It was a Bach year and a Copland year. Both had anniversaries (the 250th anniversary of J.S. Bach's death, the 100th anniversary of Aaron Copland's birth), and their music was heard far and wide. 2000 was also the year when the country's most prominent symphony orchestras couldn't seem to find anyone to lead them. Vacancies are pending in the music directorships of the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony and the Philadelphia Orchestra. This game of high-level musical chairs extends to the Florida Orchestra, which also has an opening on the podium. Longtime music director Jahja Ling announced he was stepping down at the end of the season in 2002.

Extractions: How Fayette County Came To Be by Larry K. Ripper Did you ever wonder how and when Fayette County was organized? What distant events in our state's history would shape "old La Fayette's" boundaries, as we know them today? In the days when Texas lands were still a part of Mexico, it was politically divided into governing municipalities. Two of these covered the entire lower Colorado and Brazos River basins. Mina formed the upper district, with its southern boundary near La Grange and the La Bahia Road. From there, the Municipality of Matagorda ran all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. The boundaries for these municipalities were often aligned with the river drainage systems, forming the basis for future land surveys. Much later, in North and West Texas, counties would be surveyed in a north-south, east-west orientation. When the Republic of Texas was founded in 1836, the County of Bastrop was organized at the southern end of the Municipality of Mina, with Colorado County being formed at the upper end of the old Municipality of Matagorda. La Grange, and the La Bahia Road, again formed the natural boundary between these two new counties.

Extractions: Thus Bourdieu is well-placed to argue that the fundamental element of modernity is the historical shift towards the greater significance of the economy within the whole society. From being a ìthing in itselfî the economy becomes a ìthing for itselfî. In particular, the gift exchange of goods and labour, which had once been totally organised around reciprocity, is largely replaced. What is substituted for it, of course, is the production and circulation of commodities, but also the enclosure of a sacred island of Art, where an inversion of commodity values emerge, in such a way that high sales no longer count as an acceptable measure of aesthetic value:
