Extractions: has many strings to bow Simon Blakey talks about his lifelong connection with the violin, and his various ventures in music and business. By David Sonin Picture by Nigel Sutton At 29, Simon Blakey is considered a success; in business he has carved a niche in the somewhat esoteric world of venture capital and, as a person devoted to the performing and visual arts, has laid out a blueprint for a festival for Spring 2004 that will make the violin to London what the cello has become to Manchester, the piano to Leeds and the voice to Cardiff. He never took up the fiddle, remaining loyal to the piano, which he still plays at what he modestly describes as amateur level. The concerts will reflect the broad-church approach and include performances of such genres as bluegrass, klezmer, folk, Indian, Irish and gypsy. Secondly, the festival aims to address the educational needs of people working in the field of violin music by giving them a platform for performance and a forum for discussion. In practical terms the Genius of the Violin aims to meet its objectives over a programme of 17 concerts and a similar number of workshops and masterclasses. In parallel with the Yehudi Menuhin competition, which is limited to players under 22 years old, the British Violin Making Association, a festival partner, will be staging its first violin and bow-making competition which, Blakey indicated, had already attracted hundreds of entries. Applications for the violin playing competition close on October 31.
