The LMP, founded in 1949 by Harry Blech, is Britain's longest established chamber orchestra and its members include some of the country's most highly-regarded musicians. A full house in the Dining Hall heard a beautifully-poised performance of Edward Elgar's Serenade for Strings, and Joji Hattori as soloist in Bach's Violin Concerto in A minor, as well as music from Japan. The orchestra performed Takemitsu's splendid Requiem for Strings, and the audience then heard the UK premiere of Ikuma Dan's Two Fragments in Black and Yellow , which was specially written for Joji Hattori. Dan, born in Tokyo in 1924, made early successes with symphonies, operas and film music, but was also known for his humour - his essays on music included "Pipe Smoke" ( Paipu no kemuri ) and "Songs of a Snail" (

DSCH had not written any symphonies for about 8 years since the No.9 in 1945. Probably he did not intentionally compose symphonies during that period because of Stalin and Stalinism in Russia but the main theme of the No.10 symphony is no doubt Stalin, who passed away in March, 1953, and it was completed on 27 th October, 1953. DSCH often showed his autographs "D.S.C.H." in this symphony. Mr. Alan Gilbert is well known and famous to Classical music lovers and regarded as one of promising young conductors. He conducted the symphony very energetically and the 3 rd and 4 th movements were excellent. I wish to listen to his DSCH's symphonies much more in the near future. He and The Tokyo Symphony performed A. Liadov's "The Enchanted Lade" OP.62 and S.Prokofiev's "Violin Concerto No.2 in G minor" Op.63 - Ms. Kyoko Takezawa - violin, too. And so was the Vienna Chamber Orchestra conducted by Joji Hattori. Two feats difficult to achieve were performed with grace and distinction - the antiphon responses within the string groupings where ideas move back and forth and the lustrous full orchestral singing that begin and end the work. The encore disproved the adage that the best wine should not be served last. And proved another one, that only for the Viennese is the Blue Danube really blue. Hattori from Japan, with unbuttoned zest, introduced the Blue Danube Waltz with some fetching words and then unleashed glorious playing with precise ensemble and the lilt which is uniquely Viennese. Whereas in Mumbai the programme was repeated with dancers in ball gowns at a gala event, in Chennai we gave our own distinctive accolade when a famous Bharatanatyam dancer, spontaneously waltzed gracefully out of the hall, an embodiment of the grace and music of a Viennese evening. Extractions: Recordings Gigs Biographical Gallery The first Genius of the Violin Festival was, for all intents and purposes, a sensational success. Its main goal - to celebrate every aspect of the violin's past, present and future - was met in stunning style. It was a thrill to be part of it and I'm really thankful for the chance to be involved in so many ways. Indeed, it was a privilege to be in a position to help broaden peoples' awareness of the violin beyond the classical sphere. I was involved in four concerts and I also contributed some words on jazz violin for the souvenir programme. There were two dates at the 606 Club, the Violin Summit with Mike Piggott, Stuart Hall, John Etheridge, Tom Cawley, Ole Rasmussen and Tom Hooper, and the group night with Orquestra Mahatma and my quartet sharing the evening. The two nights saw the famous little basement jazz club in Chelsea stuffed out, even turning people away! Radio 3 recorded the Summit gig for Jazz Line-up. It featured solo sets from the three violinists and a selection of triumphant ensemble pieces featuring everyone. I got so excited by the idea of us all mucking-in together I even wrote one tune just for the night, entitled 'There She Is'. Stuart brought a Hemeto Pascael tune, Mike suggested Dancy Dancy by John Handy and I wrote out arrangements of Undecided and a transcription of Bud Powell's version of 'Get Happy'. Great fun and I hope we can do it again. Complete respect to Susanne Barthelmes, Joji Hattori, Philip Shepherd et al for their incredible achievement. The next Genius Of the Violin Festival is scheduled for February 2006 and promises to include new aspects about the violin in art and in cinema. Can't wait.

Ten years ago Howard Shelley, pictured, one of Britains most admired pianists, launched the annual Thames Concerts Society season at Kingston Parish Church with a performance of Beethovens Piano Concerto No 1. Unknowingly, he was also launching a Howard Shelley institution. Every year since, the requisite Shelley performance has been a highlight of the season. He is on record as saying how much he enjoys returning to Kingston and the ambience of the parish church, and he will duly be at the keyboard for the opening concert of the 2003/04 season on October 4 to deliver Mozarts Piano Concerto No. 24 with the London Mozart Players (LMP). The LMP will give five of the seven concerts. As well as the Mozart concerto the first will include Wagners Siegfried Idyll and Beethovens Symphony No 4. The violinist Joji Hattori will double as conductor for a November 29 programme of Bachs A minor Violin Concerto, Tchaikovskys Serenade for Strings, Sibelius Valse Triste, a Mozart Divertimento and a contemporary work, Two Fragments in Black and Yellow, by the Japanese composer Ikumo Dan.

TOKYO ENSEMBLE Reviews Reviews. Tokyo Ensemble, directed by the violinist joji hattori,gave its debut at the Kioi Hall on the 30th April. The ensemble http://www.tokyo-ensemble.com/eng/reviews.htm
Extractions: In the opening Dvorak's Waltz, warm and velvety sound from the string section, characteristic of this ensemble, as well as the naturally secure intonation were already evident. This was followed by the commissioned work Two Fragments for Solo Violin and Quartet: Black and Yellow by the late Ikuma Dan which combined the enjoyment of Dan's easily accessible musical language with the visual entertainment of black-and-yellow costume. The third work Dvorak's String Quintet No.2 seemed less polished, however it left a potential for further experiment in programming - they are planning to continue incorporating chamber works in an orchestral concert. With the guest viola player Masao Kawasaki and Hattori himself as the soloists, the final work Sinfonia Concertante by Mozart was very enjoyable and full of lively spirit. Instead of trying to compete with each other's individual interpretations and techniques, the two soloists agreeably made their musical personalities come through and supported each other. This, together with very fine playing from the orchestra resulted in a pleasantly convincing performance. The concept of this newly established ensemble is to create an environment in which the performers and the audience are able to share the joy of ensemble playing: tonight's program successfully reflected this with its diversity of works included and the vitality evident throughout.
