One such musician was captured by the Portuguese from the Guinea coast and sold into slavery in Brazil. Around 1795, 'Josh Emede' (as he is called in the ship's records of the Indefatigable ) was forced by the British navy to play reels and jigs for the crew. Later known as Joseph Emidy, he settled in Falmouth, a cosmopolitan community at the time. A classical musician, he earned his living as a music teacher, giving lessons for a variety of instruments, including the piano, violin, cello and flute. Emidy's skills as a teacher and concert musician seem to have been in high demand, as requests for his services appeared in Falmouth and Truro newspapers. 'A Musical Club, Truro'

Extractions: JOSEPH URBAN opulent sets were brought to the attention of impresario Florenz Ziegfeld and Urban was put to work on Ziegfelds 1915 Follies. The critics were dazzled and hailed Urban as the real star of a revue that included W. C. Fields, Bert Williams, and Ed Wynn. He continued to work on every Ziegfeld production in part or in full until Ziegfelds death in 1932. He contributed refinement and sophistication to the Follies and, as one reviewer commented, helped to lift the revue from "something common to a plane of quality." Urbans designs for Ziegfeld book shows included hits like Sally (1920), Kid Boots (1923), Show Boat (1927), Rosalie (1928) and Whoopee (1928). In 1919, Sam Moore auditioned for Florenz Ziegfeld in New York. The happy result was a two-year run with Ziegfeld's Follies (1920 - 1921). Proficient on the violin by age seven, Sam was later sent to Macon, Georgia, to study under Professor W.C. Kaler. After a badly healed broken arm ended his aspirations as a violinist, Moore turned to the banjo and guitar and began to experiment with everyday objects as musical instruments. In spring 1917 it was announced that the FAIRBANKS TWINS were to soon appear in Florenz Ziegfeld's Follies. For the next several years they were seen in the Follies at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City. The duo appeared on stage in The Midnight Frolic (a revue), Up the Ladder and in the 1929 Warner Bros. musical film, On With the Show.

Extractions: Contents of CD3 Booklet Click to Order Recordings Johannes Brahms Violin Concerto in D, op. 77 Brahms, like his predecessor Beethoven, wrote only one violin concerto, also in the key of D major. Described once by the distinguished Viennese musician Joseph Hellmesberger, as ³Beethoven¹s heir², Brahms himself declared that ³To follow in Beethoven¹s footsteps transcends one¹s strength.² Although it is indeed safe to say that Brahms¹ concerto would not have existed without Beethoven¹s example, the story of its influences is far more intricate. The name of Eduard Reményi invariably surfaces during a discussion of Brahms¹ violin concerto. A part-German, part-Hungarian violinist who was once soloist to Queen Victoria, Reményi rescued a young Brahms from piano-playing in taverns by engaging him as his accompanist on a tour throughout Germany in 1853. Although their partnership was brief, the collaboration proved significant: Brahms was introduced to the Hungarian and gypsy folk music that Reményi played so well, eventually leading to a whole category of
