Born in 1966, Golan became the first violinist ever to receive a Ph.D. from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Golan began his musical carer at the age of 16 with the Ravinia Festival Orchestra in Illinois for the ballet companies of Hamburg and San Francisco. Since then, his musical engagements have included everything from performing in backup bands for Dionne Warwick, Johnny Mathis and Frank Sinatra, to recording motion picture soundtracks in Hollywood and appearing as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Other career highlights include performances in London and Moscow conducted by Leonard Bernstein and a European tour with Sergiu Celibidache with stops in Paris, Berlin, Hamburg, Milan, Geneva and Basel. In the summer of 1994, Golan performed two concerts in Carnegie Hall as a member of a nationally selected orchestra under the direction of Sir Georg Solti, referred to as "the orchestral equivalent of the 'Dream Team'" by the New York Times.

Now entering its third season, the Atlantic Chamber Orchestra is Portlands latest answer to the perennial musical question: where are all the young folk? And its a blunt answer. The ACO was founded specifically to seduce new listeners, people in their 20s and 30s, into classical music. Since the music itself appears to be inadequate to the job (which should make any cultural Darwinists ears prick up), the orchestra wields other tools of the seducers art champagne, poetry, sweets, spectacle, and good old physical proximity. Although anyone is welcome, if we fill the house with Portland Symphony patrons, we have failed in our mission, says Lawrence Golan, ACO co-founder, conductor, and artistic director. A valentine-themed concert Saturday evening is typical ACO fare. The overriding concept is an evening of musical and culinary aphrodisiacs, Golan says. Champagne is featured at the cash bar for an hour prior to the music. Chocolate-dipped strawberries are included in the ticket price. Extractions: Reprinted courtesy of the Journal Tribune May 13, 1999 When violinist Isaac Stern, one of the world's leading music personalities, gave a concert in Portland last year, The University of Southern Maine Department of Music's Lawrence Golan was instrumental, so to speak, in getting the maestro to give a Master Class on the Gorham campus. During that class, Stern referred to classical music as a "lovely religion." And in a National Public Radio interview last year, Itzhak Perlman was astonished when a reviewer expressed his concern that classical music might be dying out. "No, no, never," the legendary musician countered "As long as the human race exists, there will always be Mozart's 'Don Giovanni!'" So it goes that people like Stern, Perlman and Golan should be priests preaching the religion of classical music, constantly traveling, lecturing, conducting and performing. Conductor Lawrence Golan, at far left, leads the newly-formed Atlantic Chamber Orchestra in its premier performance Saturday at the Pavilion in Portland. "In my daily life, I often talk to people who have never heard a Beethoven symphony or the Mendelssohn Octet," Golan said during a recent telephone interview from Dallas, where he was preparing to lead the University of Texas-Arlington Symphony Orchestra in a concert "Everyone on earth should hear classical music."

But Generation X is Generation Zilch when it comes to exposure to the dead and the rolling over. Sure, there are some closet clarinet players lurking in our midst, but for a lot of us the only time we hear a piece of classical music is when we're watching an old Budweiser commercial. Lawrence Golan is about to change that. He and his orchestra are shaking up the stuffy, listening roomstyle venue, and when the dust settles, the atmosphere will be like nothing you've ever seen while wearing cargos. "It occurred to me that there is a whole audience sector that is basically untapped, and that is the young adults in their 20s and 30s," says Golan, music director and conductor of the newly assembled and newly conceived Atlantic Chamber Orchestra. He sees his share of the older set come out to the Portland Symphony Orchestra where he serves as concertmaster, and playing for kids is not unusual at all. So when Golan's colleagues asked him to conduct a new orchestra, he didn't see that there was really a need for one, what with the various local orchestras rhapsodizing their respective audiences on a regular basis. However, because this classically impaired middle generation presented a break in the rhythm, Golan figured this might be an important place to take some action and serve as spin doctor for this melodic malady.
