Extractions: 2 Lawrence Budmen GYPSY FIRE The rich, dark sound of Gluzman's violin (a 1609 Stradivarius once owned by the legendary Russian violinist and teacher Leopold Auer) conjured up the world of Tchaikovsky and the Russian violinistic tradition. Gluzman is the contemporary embodiment of that great Russian school of violin virtuosos that runs from Misha Elman and Jascha Heifetz through Gluzman's contemporaries Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin. His blistering performance of Ravel's showpiece received a standing, cheering ovation. And what a performance! (While Tzigane is a Frenchman's impression of Gypsy fiddlers, it remains the work of a master craftsman. Mastery was what Gluzman's rendition was all about.) Gluzman's technique is a given his virtuosity is awesome! His violin ignited a Gypsy flame beneath the music. Gluzman did not give a dutiful performance of the notes. His Tzigane glowed with the inner fire of creative inspiration. Violinist and music became one a transcendent artistic moment! (As an encore, Gluzman offered Fritz Kreisler's more refined Viennese version of Gypsy music La Gitana . Gluzman played this bon-bon with flair and style. Sentiment without bathos exactly the way Kreisler himself played this music.)

Lauded by critics and audiences alike, he has performed throughout the United States, Europe, Russia, Japan, Australia and Canada, as a soloist and in a duo partnership with his wife, the pianist Angela Yoffe. In recent seasons Vadim Gluzman appeared with Chicago, Cincinnati, Houston and Seattle Symphony Orchestras, Minnesota Orchestra, Munich and Dresden Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as Stuttgart Radio Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, and KBS Symphony Orchestra among others. Born in 1973 in the Ukraine, Vadim Gluzman began studying the violin at the age of seven. Before moving to Israel in 1990, he studied under Zakhar Bron and later under Yair Kless in Tel Aviv. He has also studied in the United States under Arkady Fomin and at the Juilliard School under the late Dorothy DeLay and Masao Kawasaki. Extractions: Some "fiddling." The renowned duo of violinist Vadim Gluzman and pianist Angela Yoffe presented a spellbinding, two-hour concert of works old and new, moving and whimsical Wednesday night before a near-capacity audience in the Roshong Recital Hall at Fort Lewis College. More than half of the audience members were students of the festivals Conservatory Young Artists program, who will, I suspect, not soon forget the musical pyrotechnics of the evening. Indeed, prior to the program, Arkady Fomin, the artistic director, told the youths that the festival Conservatory was unique for a community of Durangos size and that the musical faculty was first-rate. Gluzman and Yoffe are, of course, faculty members. The duo then began a spirited performance of Brahms "Sonata No. 1 in G." Romantic and often passionate, the three-movement work moved the musicians to a lofty level of emotional, yet disciplined presentation. Playing with closed eyes, swaying back and forth, Gluzman exhibited a near-flawless technical mastery. Yoffe was equally energetic and inspired. Her keyboard work was remarkably physical and confident.
