(Masters of the Violin Series Concert, Carnegie Hall) The Strad Magazine, 1998 Erick Friedman, the renowned American virtuoso violinist, has had a truly outstanding career as a performer. He made his New York debut at the age of fourteen, and at seventeen began studying with Jascha Heifetz, wth whom he recorded Bach's Concerto for Two Violins. Currently a full Professor of Music at Yale University, Mr. Friedman is still an active performer, conductor, and recording artist. An excerpt from his latest release, "The Romantic Violin," can be heard by clicking on the violin scroll at the top left of this page.

Sun Sentinel Review Of Sgouros-Friedman Concert 1986 violinist, PIANIST END FESTIVAL'S CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES WITH STYLE Poinciana Playhouse with a dynamic recital by veteran violinist erick friedman and piano prodigy Dimitris Sgouros. http://www.sgourosmp3.com/florida.html
Extractions: Sun Sentinel ; Fort Lauderdale; Apr 28, 1986 By: Tim Smith The Palm Beach Festival's delightful chamber music series ended in high style Saturday evening at the Royal Poinciana Playhouse with a dynamic recital by veteran violinist Erick Friedman and piano prodigy Dimitris Sgouros. The Greek pianist, who has been actively concertizing and recording since he was 13, possesses more than an assured technique. He has genuine flair and not a little interpretive depth that places him on a much higher level than the typical gifted youth. Now 16, Sgouros seems to understand fully the difference between playing notes and making music. That understanding served him extremely well in Liszt's B minor Sonata. I must confess a limited tolerance for this work, which usually sounds to my ears like the musical equivalent of an old windbag. But Sgouros managed to lessen the sonata's seemingly interminable length by means of his striking technique, vividly etched phrasing and potent ability to produce the necessary array of tone colors. It was an animated, penetrating performance. He was no less impressive in his role as accompanist for Friedman, especially in the bold and brilliant D minor Sonata for violin and piano by Saint-Saens. Sgouros was not content to be a second banana; he tackled the piano part with such gusto that there were times when Friedman hardly a shrinking violet was all but drowned out.

If in 1957 Erick Friedman had taken the advice of his early mentor and first manager, Arthur Judson, and passed up the opportunity to study with Jascha Heifetz, his career might have followed a very different course. 'He was very much opposed because he knew that Heifetz would insist that I stop giving concerts and at that time I was playing about eighty concerts a year. Judson - with some validity, I might add - felt that a career could not be stopped and restarted successfully.' Erick Friedman with his first teacher, Samuel Applebaum Born in 1939 in Newark, New Jersey, Eric (the final k was added later by Heifetz) Friedman was drawn to music early. 'I loved it. I was always listening to the radio, only to classical music. The only reason that I started to play the violin was because my father played it.' The elder Friedman, a musical amateur who played by ear, started the six-year-old Eric, who was big for his age, on a three-quarter sized instrument ('It was cheaper than a piano', his son recalls with a smile). His first teacher was Samuel Applebaum, - 'a warm and wonderful man who got me started' - whose son is the violist, Michael Tree.

Extractions: (Although Im sure none of those comments were funny at the time) I've been spending more time on guitar lately, recording modern jazz progressions into my taper player and playing them back and improvising violin over the changes, its been alot of fun. I seem to have some deep passion for polytonaly and altered chords... I still have a deep love for the sound of the nylon string acoustic (flamenco guitar) and it makes great accompanyment for the violin since it is much more quiet. If you think about it, acoustic guitar is alot more of a choice of instrument for introverts like me because the sound is not as loud and obtrusive. Ive also been writing some new material for guitar which I hope to some day record with violin and guitar. I met someone interested in playing music with me, a bass player and Im thinking of doing some things with him as a acoustic guitar/bass duet. My goal is to play some classical, jazz mixed with stuff that I write. Im also transcribing by ear the music of jazz pianist Bill Evans, jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, and the acoustic guitar music of John McLaughlin, Bill Connors, Al DiMeloa, and especially Ralph Towner. And of course Im still playing gobs of Bach for solo guitar. I still practice violin alot too, still playing my solo bach and Ive been working on Mozart Concerto 3 a little lately.

Extractions: The violin faculty encourages each student to become his or her own best teacher, first through explanation and demonstration, and eventually through critical self-awareness. No single method is stressed; rather, an approach is designed for each individual student. Rhythmic control is paramount; it is inextricably bound, both physically and emotionally, to beautiful violin playing. The approach to viola instruction stresses the overriding importance of musical language as well as technical mastery of the instrument. The search for beauty in performance is the ultimate goal; the production of an expressive sound and an acute awareness of phrasing in interpretation are also constantly kept in mind. Independent and broad exploration of viola literature is encouraged, as are new compositions to be written for the instrument. The method of cello instruction is based upon the belief that even the most imaginative musician is prevented from achieving the highest potential if he or she is limited by technical deficiencies. The student, therefore, concentrates first on the removal of tension; then learns to involve the entire body in cello playing and to experience the physical sensations associated with facility on the instrument. When the player and the instrument function as an efficient unit, the student begins to explore the vast subtleties of sound, phrasing, and interpretation available to those who have thoroughly mastered the cello.

Extractions: 27 May 1998 This was a red-letter day for those who know about violin playing, as Erick Friedman hardly ever comes to London and is represented in the record catalogues only by a Tchaikovsky Concerto stemming from Eastern Europe. I found much of his playing - on a Joseph Curtin violin - absolutely ravishing in spite of certain puzzling aspects. Even with the imperturbable Gordon Back at the piano, the two sonatas in the first half- Brahms's G major and Beethoven's C minor - did not really cohere as interpretations, and there were patches of poor tuning in unexpected places. On the other hand, Friedman is the sort of player who can really dazzle you with the second subject of a sonata movement after throwing away the first. I enjoyed Debussy's Sonata more, and Ezra Laderman's Duo, dedicated to Friedman, came across well. Then suddenly the violinist put aside the music stand and became an artist of an altogether different colour for Saint- Saens's
