Extractions: sgroi@oswego.edu In June of 1996, I made yet another pilgrimage to Feldkirch for FiDi and the Schubertiade. This time I only stayed a week, but it was a week in which I heard ten concerts. The theme of the 1996 Schubertiade was "Schubert and Beethoven," which was certainly reflected in the concert programs, with an additional nod in the direction of the 100th anniversary of the death of Clara Schumann. I renewed my acquaintance with the Hotel Rosenberger and the usual guests at the Schubertiade. I was sad to learn that one of the mainstays among the Schubertiade visitors, Alfred Krempel, had just died of complications following pneumonia, which he had contracted in January while in Salzburg at the Mozartwoche to hear his dear friend Andras Schiff. Doris and Fred Krempel had "adopted" many of the younger Schubertiade guests and had entertained us over the years, particularly with dinners after concerts at their "Stammtisch" in the Gasthof Lingg in Feldkirch. Although Fred was 84 years old, his death was still unexpected and a shock to everybody who knew them, and that was practically everybody at the Schubertiade. Fred died literally the day before the Schubertiade began, and it was quite painful to go to each concert and see the two empty seats in the front row, where he and Doris always sat. That same day, there was an afternoon Lieder recital by Boje Skovhus. He sang an expanded version of "Schwanengesang," with additional songs by Johann Gabriel Seidl. The festival staff, in their infinite generosity, had given me a seat in the front row center for this concert. I asked myself, why don't I get this kind of seat for Fischer-Dieskau? At any rate, I was in the perfect position to see (not to mention hear) that Skovhus was in real distress. He seemed to be suffering from allergies or a sinus problem. His voice only sounded full and healthy at full volume and in his lower range. Otherwise, it was very pinched and nasal and sounded all bottled up in his head. And even at full voice it had a pressed, unpleasant edge to it. Boje Skovhus is a very attractive man with a very appealing personality, and I would love to hear him in opera. My third experience of him as a Lieder singer convinced me that Lieder singing is not his strong point by any means.

Extractions: sgroi@oswego.edu In due time, Great Performance Tours advertised a trip to the Schubertiade Hohenems for June, 1992, and I reserved a place on the tour. The actual venue of the concerts was Feldkirch, the oldest city in the Voralberg, in Western Austria. As a college student, I had studied briefly in Bregenz, the capital of the Voralberg, and I remembered Feldkirch and Hohenems from that time. It seemed to be a pleasant coincidence to be returning to that part of the world. The Schubertiade Hohenems had been in existence since 1976. One of its co-founders was Hermann Prey, who wanted to have a festival at which all of Schubert's works would be performed in chronological order. There is no historical connection between Franz Schubert and Hohenems, but there is a palace there with a beautiful wood-paneled room called the Rittersaal, which made an lovely setting for chamber concerts. The count who owned the palace agreed to make it available for the festival, and the city of Hohenems put up a considerable sum of money to carry out needed restorations to the palace. Our first concert, in the Konservatoriumssaal, was a performance of Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde" performed by Brigitte Fassbaender and Uwe Heilmann, accompanied by pianist Cyprien Katsaris. I was suffering from the usual jet lag, but I was tremendously impressed by the beauty and power of Fassbaender's voice and the intensity of her performance. Uwe Heilmann, who was suffering from a cold, made his greatest impression by dashing on and off the stage so he could blow his nose. I was amazed at how "orchestral" Katsaris made the accompaniment sound.

Extractions: (Violinist) Julia Fischer, born in Munich, Germany, in June 1983, has already established herself as one of the foremost young violinists. Critics in Germany have said of her that she is "not a talent, but a full-fledged phenomenal violinist," ( Die Welt ) and that she is "only 15, but stylistically already mature.... She takes your breath away," ( Stuttgarter Nachrichten ). Of her 1999 Concertgebouw recital debut, the music critic for Die Volkskrant wrote, "After Schubert's Sonata in A, op.162, where astonishment about her abilities created musical ecstasy, in Grieg and Brahms she arrived at interpretations that only a few mature violinists could equal." Julia works with such internationally acclaimed conductors as Christoph Eschenbach, Lorin Maazel, Yehudi Menuhin, Bernhard Klee, Asher Fish, Marek Janowski, Johannes Goritzki, Michael Helmrath, Jeffrey Tate, Simone Young, and Justus Frantz and with a variety of leading German, British, Polish, French, Italian and Slovakian orchestras. Julia has performed in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Slovakia, France, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Cyprus and Japan, with concerts broadcast on TV and radio in every major European country, as well as on many US public radio stations. In the 1999-2000 season, Julia returns to the Ravinia Festival to perform chamber music with Maestro Eschenbach at the piano, performs Brahms' Concerto for Violin in G-major with Giuseppe Sinopoli and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, makes her Wigmore Hall recital debut with Jean-Yves Thibaudet on piano, and concertizes throughout Germany with orchestras such as the Bayerishes Rundfunksinfonieorchester, the Kolner Kammerorchester and the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker.

She will be accompanied by pianist Robert Kulek. Fischer debuted on the German music scene in the late 1990s, quickly garnering praise and stature. She began her formal training at the Leopold Mozart Conservatory in Augsburg, and at age nine she entered the Munich Academy of Music, where she studied under Ana Chumachenco.

Extractions: by Brian Mix Tonight's recital presents three representative incarnations of the genre known as the "violin sonata." It may seem self-evident that a violin sonata is what it is; we expect two performers to emerge from the wings and play a composition that is essentially a piece for a violin soloist. However, to think in such a manner is to neglect the history of the form, and overestimate the importance that the violin has had throughout much of classical music history. The violin represents for us today the traditionally pre-eminent solo instrument, but it very nearly lost that status to the piano, and the two instruments now occupy the twin thrones of the musical Royal Court. Devil's Trill Sonata is perhaps his best known work today, occupying a place in many a virtuoso's repertoire. It dates from about 1745, although this is a conjecture based on stylistic details; Tartini is said to have changed his style to a more "graceful and expressive" manner in 1744. His music is a peculiar blend of lyricism, virtuosity, and pathos, leading the way into the Rococo era to come.
