Extractions: Leon Botstein, Musical Director At age four he started violin lessons, at seven he was accepted into the Vienna Conservatory, which he graduated cum laude, at eleven he gave concerts in the Austrian capital, at thirteen he had a first performance of the Sonata in A minor for Piano and Violin and of his Quintet at seventeen he had the premiere of his Romanian Poem and his Sonata in D major for Piano and Violin. Unlike his friend Bartok, Enescu does not borrow directly from the folkloric raw material. Instead, he filters the hybrid elements, and, going deeper and stylizing, strives for a new musical vocabulary, for a personal compositional syntax within modern esthetics. His music becomes an expressive synthesis between East and West, a unique fusion of inspiration and arduous experimentation, of nostalgic, pastoral lyricism and bracing serenity. At twenty-four, Enescu would define himself first as a symphonic composer and then as a virtuoso player. This order of preference would be challenged, again and again, as his fame grew. It would be left to posterity to confirm and legitimize his place as a composer. His virtuosity as a violin and piano player, ever more engaged in triumphant tours with some of the greatest performers of the times, his prodigious memory (he knew all of Wagners work by heart), the grace with which he could conjure up each musical note, as if recovered then and there out of nothingnessall this stunted his compositional projects. It only delayed the reception of his compositions, which amply deserved the recognition conferred upon him, among others, by his illustrious student, Yehudi Menuhin, who called him "the most complex musician of our century."

Extractions: This is a vastly interesting book, I cannot remember making so many notes or annotations to a book on a composer's life and music for many years. If I quoted from half of the pages I turned the corners down, this review would stretch way beyond the editor's forbearance. The book details Enescu's life from his early years in Romania where he was entranced by the rich diversity of the Romanian folk music tradition, through to his sad death in poverty in Paris during the night of 3/4 th May 1955, after his wealth had been lost in fleeing Communist Romania after World War II. We read of Enescu's fascination with polyphony and about his early compositions and of the Queen of Romania's patronage of his music. (The Queen was a colourful character and very artistic writing under the name of 'Carmen Sylva.') All the major musical figures of the age continue to parade through the pages of the book as it advances through the life of the composer all the while the author describing all the works in accessible terms loaded with just the right amount of musical examples. The chamber music, instrumental pieces and the orchestral works including the symphonies are all covered. There is a whole chapter devoted to Enescu's opera

George Enescu was possessed of one of the greatest musical minds in the history of the art. His abilities were fourfold in that he was a world-class violinist, pianist, conductor and composer. Add to this his impressive roster of famous students and his unanimous reputation as one of the kindest and most generous of mentors and one must only marvel that this brilliant artist died in poverty with only a bed and a chair to his name, too proud to take money from any number of willing colleagues and friends.

Extractions: George Enescu was one of the most prodigiously gifted musicians of the twentieth century: a great violinist and composer, a distinguished conductor, an accomplished pianist, able cellist and a famous violin teacher who numbered Christian Ferras, Arthur Grumiaux and Yehudi Menuhin among his pupils. His musical memory was phenomenal, a fact that contributed to the loss of some of his own works which he composed but never wrote down. As a composer, Enescu's published output was relatively modest, though it contained some substantial works, including his masterpiece, the opera Odeipe . The fact that his three published symphonies were composed between 1905 and 1918 might suggest - wrongly - that his interest in the genre was modest and lasted for less then fifteen years. Actually, as a student Enescu was a prolific composer (nearly three hundred works date from the period up to 1900) and he completed three other symphonies (as well as a Chamber Symphony finished in 1954) and began work on another three in the years 1894-1941. 1996 Paul Banks
