Great Performances . Dialogue . Hilary Hahn | PBS of violinists. He knew about my interest in players from earlier eras, and he hada pretty good idea of how exciting it would be to me to see mischa elman, http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/dialogue/dialogue_violin_hahn.html
Extractions: HH : I was surely most influenced by my two teachers Klara Berkovich in Baltimore, from age five to ten, and Jascha Brodsky in Philadelphia, from age ten to 17. Both were very demanding teachers, but very kind, superb violinists: musicians of style and taste who allowed no technical shortcuts. I was extremely lucky to grow up under their guidance. HH : It gives young players and old ones, for that matter an opportunity to see that they are part of a long and very rich tradition of violinists, each of whom played differently, each of whom played effectively. And for those who are studious, it is a great resource for studying the technique of playing the violin. Nearly every school, every body type, every possible manner of holding the violin and bow is represented. GP : The filmmakers touch on the fact that the careers of some child prodigies were cut short due to the pressures of stardom. Is this a concern among contemporary artists like yourself, who have been in the spotlight from such a young age? How do you cope with the rigors of performing and being in the public eye?

The Great Pianists compilation begins with Claudio Arrau recorded in 1962 performing in his usual magisterial fashion the finale of Beethoven's Emperor concerto, followed by a fascinating performance of historic significance: Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with Jorge Bolet as soloist, from a broadcast Feb. 3, 1961, with Paul Whiteman (1890-1967) conducting. Whiteman had premiered this music in 1924, recorded itmusic in 1927 with the composer as soloist, again in 1945 with Earl Wild. John Browning's performance of the finale of the Brahms first concerto, from a broadcast Feb. 4, 1963, gets off to a shaky start but all is well afterwards. Robert Casadesus is heard in three selections, from a broadcast Feb. 25, 1964, we see the finale of Beethoven's

Violin Playing As I Teach It position to learn from, observe, and teach some of the best violinists of the haveknown that Joachim had such stage fright, or that mischa elman almost died http://music-books-online.net/0486239179.html
Extractions: Customer Reviews This book is an interesting look into the mind of one of the greatest violin teachers. However, much of his technical advice is old-school and no longer accurate. In fact, much of his advice regarding posture and bow hold is completely incorrect. That being the case, I would not recommend this book to anyone who does not already have solid technical ability or who is not able to differentiate between good advice and nonsense. Other than that, I appreciate Auer's thoughts and opinions, with a grain of salt of course :-) Auer's book is a gem. The old violin Maestro describes in few and simple words the intricate and complex state of mind and abilities of the serious violinist. The book is NOT, I repeat NOT intended as a violin technique textbook. The book is directed, primarily, to violin teachers whom are responsible and concious of the fact that they are responsible for the correct development of the upcoming violinist. For those who so wrongly bashed the book for its prozaic content; learn to read between the lines. I give this book 4 stars! Kathleen Parlow - Biographies - The Virtual Gramophone After attending a concert by another fourteenyear-old violin sensation, mischa elman, the Parlows sought out elman s professor, Leopold Auer. http://www.collectionscanada.ca/gramophone/m2-1022.1-e.html
Extractions: The woman who became the most respected female violinist of her time was born in Fort Calgary, Alberta in 1890. She was the only child of Charlie Parlow, a Hudson's Bay Company employee, and his wife, Minnie Parlow. Her mother took Kathleen to live in San Francisco when Kathleen was four, and they did not return to live in the nation of her birth until 1940. Mother and daughter nevertheless retained strong ties to Canada; in fact, as Kathleen's international career developed, she was often billed as "the Canadian violinist". Minnie Parlow herself played the violin, so while in California she gave her daughter a half-size violin. Kathleen received lessons at first from a cousin, Conrad Coward, who was a professional violin teacher; it was he who first called her a prodigy. As her immense talent declared itself, she was sent to the violin professor, Henry Holmes. Parlow's rapid ascension was partly due to being home-schooled, where she could devote more time to her instrument than she could have through normal schooling. Parlow herself believed that nature was responsible for the ease with which she mastered even the most difficult violin technique: "I have a very good hand for a fiddle. It has a big stretch. There really is such a thing as a physical aptitude for the violin, and I had it" (Hambleton, 1978).

Extractions: Comment : It was a joy to see Morini play, albeit just for one movement. She was one of the pre-eminent violinists of the Vienna School, the sound as dictinct from the Russian School is so lean and so elegant. She was the perhaps the only vioinist whom Heifetz really admired. Heifetz actually took his violin to her asking her to teach him her staccato Menuhin also asked Oistrakh to share with him his staccato too. We also have Menuhin and Oistrakh in this DVD. Menuhin played part of the Paganini whereas the Oistrakhs played part of the Bach souble concerto. Fans of Menuhin and Oistrakh of course would not like to miss them. What are really outstanding in this DVD are: 1/ Isaac Stern's Saint-Saens. Having heard his marvelous performance, one have to upgrade him to one of the greatest masters of all times as a whole even better than many of Oistrakh's playing; 2/ we have a top representive of the finest Viennese School of viloinists, Morini which is so different from those violinists of the Modern Russian School: she played with such grace and assurance, and was definitely an aristocrat of violinists. She was the one who automatically moved Furtwangler to tears upon the very sight of her after WWII...
Extractions: price: A documentary film by Bruno Monsaingeon devoted to the 20th century's greatest violinists, The Art of Violin really cannot be faulted. The same, incidentally, can also be said of the similar volumes that cover the piano and singing, so there's never been a better time to collect a personal audio-visual archive of some wonderful historical performers. The added dimension provided by the painstakingly collected film material (here featuring no fewer than 20 outstanding soloists) is of exceptional value when observing violin technique, and the diversity of approaches presented here in loving detail is in itself a subject for endless comparison. The material mixes archive performance footage, much of which one might never have dreamed existed, with interviews and documentary commentary. However, rather than turn the project into a museum piece, Monsaingeon includes contributions from contemporary figures such as Itzhak Perlman and Hilary Hahn. An absolute must.
