Extractions: The long in the works remake of the classic 1956 science fiction film FORBIDDEN PLANET is moving forward once again, thanks to DreamWorks' Michael de Luca. The project had previously been in development at New Line Cinema, where it had been in development under de Luca until the exec was given his walking papers. Since then, New Line placed the project in turnaround, which allowed de Luca to snag the rights for D'Works. The original film, which starred Leslie Neilsen, Walter Pidgeon and Anne Francis, was a futuristic adaptation of Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST. A military craft is sent to check up on a colony that had been started on the distant planet of Altair-4. It is soon learned that all the colonists, except a Dr. Morbius (Pidgeon) and his daughter Altaira (Francis), were killed by a mysterious unseen force long ago. Now, with the coming of Commander Adams (Nielsen) and his men, the force seems to have made a return, attacking their ship and killing men. All this may have some connection to Morbius' research into a long dead native race of the planet, called the Krel. The remake, which had previously been of interest to James Cameron and Frank Darabont, will be produced by Richard Saperstein and Lindsay Dunlap.

ABBA "ABBA GOLD - GREATEST HITS" 1992 has been quite a year for ABBA, the Swedish quartet who dominated the charts of most of the world for around eight years, starting in 1974. Thanks to prolific hit makers "Erasure" and their hugely popular EP, "ABBA-ESQUE", ABBA songs have once again appeared at the top of the UK singles chart, and simultaneously one of the most popular live attractions in the world is Australian band "Bjorn Again", a group whose act is strongly based on ABBA hits. Neither Erasure nor Bjorn Again chose to pay tribute to ABBA by chance - Vince Clark and Andy Bell admired the numerous ABBA hits, and were sure that those fabulous songs remained popular, not only with parents who so clearly remember the hits from the first time round, but also with their teenage kids. Bjorn Again doubtless knew that ABBA had very rarely performed live, and that a demand existed for a group that performed ABBA's songs like ABBA themselves. One reason for ABBA not continuing to dominate the world's charts was the pressure of super stardom which contributed to the two married couples becoming divorce statistics. Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus still continue as a prolific and highly successful song writing team, whose most internationally prominent work, post ABBA, has been their collaboration with famed lyricist Tim Rice which produced "Chess", an acclaimed musical that includes several hits.

January Magazine's Crime Fiction Report #8 "What makes New York unique among public places in America is that the narrowness of its geography forces its citizens to confront face-to-face, every day, the diversity of their world. Here, every conceivable age, class, race, profession, political and philosophical viewpoint, sexual persuasion, temperament, and social style are on display. In the city's crowded public spaces ... New Yorkers find themselves presented with nothing less than the entire glorious, maddening, imperfect spectacle of the modern world itself." Ric Burns and James Sanders, New York: An Illustrated History Is it really any wonder that New York City has generated such a landslide of fiction over the years? By itself, it is almost a fantastical place too much all at once to be believed, a metropolis of the imagination that is "greater than the sum of its constituent parts," to quote writer Luc Sante. E.B. White once likened New York to poetry: "The island of Manhattan," he commented half a century ago, "is without any doubt the greatest human concentrate on earth, the poem whose magic is comprehensible to millions of permanent residents but whose full meaning will always remain elusive." Many authors from William Dean Howells and Ayn Rand to Tom Wolfe and Jay McInerney have sought to capture a bit of that poetry inside their own fiction, with varying success.
