Extractions: Original Review: It is very rare for a soundtrack to be embraced wholeheartedly and celebrated loudly by aficionados of both classical music and film music, but this is what has happened to John Corigliano's The Red Violin. Despite being arguably one of the most brilliant and talented American composers of his generation, this is only John Corigliano's third film score - his others being the wildly impressionistic, abstract, Oscar-nominated Altered States (1980) and the largely unknown Revolution (1985). Instead, Corigliano became an established member of the New York musical circle, writing original pieces, ballets, operas and suchlike, and it has taken fourteen years to tempt Corigliano back to the podium. It has been worth the wait for, as well as his own musical genius, he has brought with him some of the best and brightest talents of the classical world, including the brilliant Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and the incredibly talented virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell. In a way, this film is the perfect story for a traditional composer to be involved in, as it tells the life story of the titular instrument, and that of its five owners as it is passed on over the course of 300 years. The film is directed by François Giraud, who previously made 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould, and stars (amongst others) Greta Scacchi, Jason Flemyng and Samuel L. Jackson. Corigliano's score is structured in five parts, each one devoted to one of the five locations in which the violin finds itself: Cremona, where it is made; Vienna, where it is owned and played by a child prodigy; Oxford, where it is given to an English lord by some travelling gypsies; Shanghai, where its fourth owner keeps it hidden away in case it is discovered by the Communists; and modern-day Montreal, where it is auctioned as a priceless antique.

Gershwin was a prolific composer, but because of his premature death at the age of 39, his plan to compose a major musical work for the violin never was able to come to fruition. Nonetheless, violinists throughout the century have made an effort to play Gershwin themselves. Having loved his Tchaikovsky and Sibelius interpretations, I would expect much more from this CD. Both the Beethoven and Mendelssohn lacked enough color and textures. The intimacy of Mendelssohn was lost when the tempo of the second theme was around 20 beats faster per minute. The beauty of the second was somewhat smuffled by Bell's constant exaggeration in his vibrato. The third movement was very nicely played though.

As a child Joshua indulged in many passions outside of music, becoming an avid computer game player and a competitive athlete. He placed fourth in a national tennis tournament at age 10 and still keeps his racquet close by. Joshua received his first violin at age four after his parents, both psychologists by profession, noticed him plucking tunes with rubber bands he had stretched around the handles of his dresser drawers. By 12 he was serious about the instrument thanks in large part to the inspiration of renowned violinist and pedagogue Josef Gingold, who had become his beloved teacher and mentor. Bell performs in this tradition of bringing the violin to Gershwin's music as Gershwin himself was never able to accomplish in his lifetime. Meanwhile, the versatile John Williams reveals himself as a talented pianist and deft accompanist; he makes a rare recording appearance here on the piano, as accompanist on "Three Preludes".
Gershwin himself appears on piano elsewhere on the CD, courtesy of his piano roll recording of the song "Sweet and Low-Down". But the centerpiece of this collection is the Porgy and Bess Fantasy, arranged for violin by composer Alexander Courage (best known now for writing the original "Star Trek" theme). Bell contributed many of his own embellishments to the violin part, including a cadenza leading to the finale. Since his emergence as a child prodigy in 1981, he has gone on to perform with the world's leading orchestras. Gershwin Fantasy will surely bolster Bell's growing reputation as a dazzling soloist and a passionate virtuoso.
