Extractions: Updated on March 1, 2001 New Information Joshua won the Grammy for Best Instrumental Soloist with an Orchestra for his recording of the Maw Violin Concerto! Biography Highlights Born on December 9, 1967 in Bloomington, Indiana; Joshua Bell's brilliant career began at age five when his parents gave him a violin. Not surprisingly, he proved to be a quick study. In 1979, the world renowned violinist, Joseph Gingold, became his teacher and mentor after Joshua attended Meadowmount's summer program and studied under Ivan Galamian and Joseph Gingold. In 1981, he won the Seventeen Magazine/General Motors competition and made his orchestral debut with Ricardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Following closely on the heels of those two triumphs, he debuted at Carnegie Hall and won an Avery Fisher Career Grant. From 1987 to 1996, he recorded for London/Decca records, releasing thirteen records under that label. In October 1996, he signed with Sony Classical. His first recording under that label is "Gershwin Fantasy" followed up by "Short Trip Home" with Edgar Meyer, Sam Bush, and Mike Marshall; "Listen to the Storyteller" with Wynton Marsalis; and the soundtracks for "The Red Violin" and "Music of the Heart". For the movie The Red Violin , Joshua served as the artistic advisor, body double, and the performing artist responsible for all on-screen violin sounds. The movie traces the fictional history of a rare violin through three centuries and stars Samuel L. Jackson, Greta Scacchi, Monique Mercure, Carlo Cecchi, Jason Flemying, Remy Girard, and Colm Feore; and is directed by Francois Girard.

Extractions: Joshua Bell was born in Bloomington, Indiana in 1967. He received his first violin at age five and was seriously committed to the instrument by age twelve, when he had the privilege to meet renowned violinist and pedagogue Josef Gingold, who became his beloved teacher and mentor. As winner of the Seventeen Magazine/General Motors competition in 1981, he came to national attention at fourteen years of age. That year, he made his highly acclaimed orchestral debut with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and soon after debuted at Carnegie Hall, won an Avery Fisher Career Grant, and made his first recordings, creating a sensation that rapidly spread throughout the music world. His Violin Early in his career Joshua Bell played an unusual guitar shaped violin by Antonio Stardivari, the greatest violin maker in history. Stradivari did a lot of experimentation with the dimensions of the violin, but he apparently only made one guitar shaped violin with the rounded corners. The instrument is generally regarded as not having a great sound, which may explain why he only made one. This violin can be clearly seen in this early publicity photo. Joshua bell sold this instrument and currently plays an Antonio Stradivari violin known as the "Tom Taylor." It was constructed in Cremona, Italy in 1732.

Extractions: Joshua Bell Grammy® Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell has been captivating audiences around the globe for more than 20 years. Known for his poetic musicality, Joshua first came to national attention at age 14 when he made his highly acclaimed orchestral debut with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. That performance, followed by his Carnegie Hall debut, Avery Fisher career grant and recording contract, created a sensation that spread throughout the music world. Now in his thirties, Joshua has performed with nearly every leading symphony orchestra and conductor, recorded 27 albums and earned the rare title of classical music superstar. A true artist and intellectual whose music feeds your brain and your heart, said Newsweek. In October of 2003, Joshua received the Indiana Governors Arts Award and his 27th CD was released from Sony Classical entitled Romance of the Violin. Featuring a collection of timeless classical melodies recorded with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and conducted by Michael Stern, selections from the CD will be heard on his PBS TV special airing January 14, 2004: Live From Lincoln Center: Joshua Bell at the Penthouse. Joshua and his two sisters were raised in Bloomington, Indiana where he received his first violin at age four after his parents, both psychologists, noticed him plucking tunes with rubber bands he had stretched around the handles of his dresser drawers. By 12 he was serious about the instrument thanks to the inspiration of his beloved teacher and mentor, renowned violinist and pedagogue Josef Gingold. In 1989, Joshua received an Artist Diploma in Violin Performance from Indiana University. Just two years later, his alma mater honored him with a Distinguished Alumni Service Award.
