For those aspiring to study in the US, especially in fields like engineering and the social sciences, the GRE is one of the primary perequisites. The normal preparation involves grabbing hold of a Barron's and studying it inside out and at the most joining some classes that specialise in coaching students for such exams. While that may have been somewhat sufficient a few years back, today you need much more. As of now, taking the Computer Based Test (CBT) is compulsory in India as well as in the rest of the world. The CBT differs from the earlier PBT (paper-based tests) in that the CBT is adaptive, i.e. the questions are asked as per the examinee's aptitude. (If he/she answers a question correctly, the next one is more difficult and if it's answered wrong the subsequent question is relatively simpler.) Thus, the computer tries to gauge your standard and scores you accordingly. The question arises - what extra effort do I need to make it good in the new format? The answer, is a feel of the real thing: the real tests with the revised timing, the revised number of questions, the revised methodology of grading, etc. Here are some of the more popular packages available in the market: And now for the hitch - you have to buy the entire pack i.e. a three CD pack - one each for the GR, GMAT and LSAT. So you end up paying for three CDs, two of which you will probably never use. But look on the bright side, if it does earn you 100 points more in your aggregate, you could end up saving as much as $2,000 - (Rs 85,000) in a scholarship. Kaplan's stuff costs Rs 1,995 - which is the most expensive, but then again, good things don't come cheap. Check out their website at: www.kaplan.com. If you're lucky, you could even download a free diagnostic test from their site.
