Metrology is a continuously developing area, as illustrated by the photo to the right. It shows the old national metre prototype together with one of the two lasers, which are the tools of to-day. Measurements play a key role in modern life - in industry as well as in trade and in society in general, in assuring quality and safety in assigning costs. In addition, there is a growing need in science and technology for increasingly accurate and more complex measurements. The duties of the National Laboratories involve maintaining and developing the national measurement standards and ensuring their international traceability. These are areas in which research and international cooperation play important parts. SP participates, for example, in the development of definitions of the units of measurement and in international comparisons. With the national standards as our starting point, it is our task to ensure that measurement expertise and traceability find their way out to Swedish industry and society in general. In practice, this means that we calibrate measuring instruments, arrange technical training and assist industry in solving measurement problems. For these tasks, we possess advanced measuring equipment and measurement environments, together with highly skilled and experienced personnel.

Mr. Hartness who had already designed the first self-opening die head for cutting threads, recognized the difficulties in checking all elements of screw threads and therefore enlisted the services of Mr. Porter in the design of a optical method of projecting light across the thread form onto a screen for comparison to a master layout.
