The elliptical movements of the stator are converted into the movement of a slider pressed into frictional contact with the stator. The consequent movement can either be rotational or linear depending on the design of the structure. Their invention is usually attributed to Barth and Vishnevsky et al and they have been extensively studied over the last 20 years particularly since Sashidas invention of the travelling wave ultrasonic motor (TWUM) and there are some excellent reviews on the subject .
