The Computational Engineering Building has splashes of color, fat columns, vivid lattices, and richly ornamented floors and ceiling. Designed by London architect John Outram, the $16.5 million, 113,000-square-foot CEB will be renamed for a prominent Rice alumnus, to be announced at a dedication ceremony Friday. The building sits on Inner Loop drive, across from the campus' flagship Lovett Hall (1912). It completes the engineering quadrangle, carrying out a scheme of quadrangles called for in the original campus plan. The CEB is one of three buildings Rice is adding in a spree of construction. Under way to the south are the $8.3 million James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy and the $12.1 million Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology. The CEB will be the home of several departments in the George R. Brown School of Engineering, dealing with computer science, computational and applied mathematics, statistics, and electrical and computer engineering. Not all observers have embraced the building. Writing in CITE magazine, Rice architecture professor Richard Ingersoll decried its "awkwardly proportioned" 6-foot-wide columns and "hideous skin patterns," saying they would add "a Quasimodo effect to the campus."

Examples of its application include hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, propulsion, heat transfer, and structure and it is used to support activities of government agencies such as the Department of Defense, NASA, the Environmental Protection Agency and their industrial partners. The UTC SimCenter conducts research with a high-speed connection to Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Candidates in the Ph.D. program will work with SimCenter faculty as they explore research projects.
