The wonder, in fact, was that it had performed so well for so long. "Engineers would prefer that people wonder at the durability of their creations and be surprised by their ability to avoid the modes of catastrophic failure that are all too common today," says J. Tinsley Oden, director of the Texas Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (TICAM), holder of an endowed chair of engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, and the leader of the engineering thrust area of NPACI. "Our aim in NPACI will be to address major technological problems that affect the prosperity, security, and overall quality of life of the people in our society," Oden says. According to Oden, a properly coordinated, multidisciplinary effort can take advantage of advances in high performance computing to solve significant engineering problems and develop, at lower cost, goods with dramatically improved durability, new techniques for noninvasive surgery, advances in microelectronics, enhanced oil recovery and pollution control, and safer vehicles. In line with these aims, Oden says, the engineering area will focus initially on four projects: design and characterization of engineering materials, large-scale simulation of electromagnetic and acoustic fields, oil reservoir simulation and subsurface pollution remediation, and crash worthiness of vehicles.

Extractions: The Computational Science and Engineering Education Program at the Australian National University has been underway since 1996. The Program is a joint initiative between the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology and the ANU Supercomputer Facility Click here for information about the objectives and pedagogical aims of the CSEEP project. A "flagship" case study for the program is the analysis of the stainless steel support structure for the "Puppy" sculpture which was carried out by Sydney firm DW Knox and Partners. This study has been part of the ENGN4518 Computational Engineering and Computer Graphics courses. Jeff Koons: Puppy 1995 Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Australia, Henry Gardner (Program Director) Computer Graphics CSEEP staff supervise three 4th year student projects and three PhD projects in cooperation with other ANU staff. The HPC Laboratory has been established as the central site for the CSEE program on campus. The laboratory is used both as a graphics laboratory for desktop-scale modelling, and as a front end to the high performance supercomputers at ANUSF to perform "compute intensive" calculations while visualising the data in the lab.

It will provide an easy access to engineering-specific codes which reside on the computer servers in ME/IUPUI for remote users, including those in Bloomington and West Lafayette campuses. It will open doors for metacomputing on the Internet via a parallel-computing hub to be established in conjunction with this project. The experiences gained through this project will provide valuable data for the developers of Internet 2 in Indiana University. It will increase the chances of the CFD Laboratory at ME/IUPUI for attracting funds from external sources. Technical support from IU/UITS will be sought for access to Internet 2. A Masterís student will be hired to work on this project who will also write a thesis on the technical aspects of the applications to be developed. A report will be prepared to summarize the findings, and a technical paper will be submitted to an Internet related conference. This project is expected to impact the both teaching and research activities in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IUPUI. This type of computing will eventually reduce the need for constantly maintaining and upgrading computer laboratories on the campus, since most of the computing will be done by remote users on the Internet.
