Extractions: There was a very special quilt show in Atlanta in the spring of 1996. It was the display, at the Nicholson Gallery of the Atlanta History Center, of almost 400 quilts made in honor of the Centennial Olympic Games held here that year. The show, entitled "The Olympic Games Quilts, America's Welcome to the World," continued through May 19. It was the result of an effort organized by the Georgia Quilt Project four years ago, shortly after the Barcelona Olympics. That group, formed in the 1980s to document the state's quilts and quilters, wanted to find a way to commemorate, through quilts, the first Olympic Games to be held in the South. Working with the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG), the Quilt Project proposed that the quilters of Georgia make a gift of quilts to the athletes and the Olympic organizers of each of the nearly 200 countries participating in the Atlanta Olympics. Two quilts would be presented to each country one to the athlete who serves as the flagbearer for the nation in the opening ceremonies, and the other to that country's Olympic committee. The JPEG images on this page are snapshots I made when visiting the show in the Spring of 1996. Clicking on the images will bring up a larger version of the image shown. The quilts were not hung in such a way that all of them could be seen, so these are not meant to be documentary photos, but just to give the flavor of this remarkable quilt show. The program/catalogue for the exhibit is a 144-page book in the large-format style of quilt books entitled

The purpose is achieved primarily through research into the history of the Olympic Movement and the Olympic Games, through the gathering of historical and statistical data concerning the Olympic Movement and Olympic Games, through the publication of the research via journals and other publications, and through the cooperation of the membership. ISOH is a non-profit organization whose dues are used solely for the production of such publications and research. At the beginning of the new millennium, the ISOH membership roster is approaching 300 strong from 50 nations. The membership includes most of the well-known Olympic historians and researchers on Olympic topics. Most of the recent books on the Olympic Games have been written by ISOH Members. In 1992 the Openweight was dropped and there are 7 remaining official weight classes for men. In addition women's competition was added to the Olympics as an official medal sport with 7 weight classes.

The Paralympics will take place in Salt Lake City from March 7th to March 16th 2002. It would be hard to find a place more suited to hosting the Winter Olympics than Salt Lake City. The city's stunning setting - surrounded by the Rocky Mountain peaks of the Wasatch Front, that seem close enough to touch - would be reason enough to hold the Olympics here. Extractions: Wilma Rudolph Track and Field Athlete Wilma Rudolph was the first American woman runner to win three gold medals in the Olympic games. Her performance was all the more remarkable in light of the fact that she had double pneumonia and scarlet fever as a young child and could not walk without braces until age 11. Rudolph was born on June 23, 1940, in St. Bethlehem, Tennessee, the 17th of 19 children, and soon moved with her family to Clarksville. At an early age, she survived polio and scarlet fever, only to be left with the use of one leg. Through daily leg massages administered in turn by different members of her family, she progressed to the point where she was able walk only with the aid of a special shoe. Three years later, however, she discarded the shoe, and began joining her brother in backyard basketball games. At Burt High School in Clarksville, while a sophomore, Rudolph broke the state basketball record for girls. As a sprinter, she was undefeated in all of her high school track meets. In 1957, Rudolph enrolled at Tennessee State University and began setting her sights for the Olympic games in Rome. In the interim, she gained national recognition in collegiate meets, setting the world record for 2000 meters in July of 1960. In the Olympics, she earned the title of the "World's Fastest Woman" by winning gold medals for the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash (Olympic record), and for anchoring the 400-meter relay (world record). She was named by the Associated Press as the U.S. Female Athlete of the Year for 1960, and also won United Press Athlete of the Year honors.
