Irvine Valley College hosted the Western Regional Wheelchair Tennis Tournament last week. It was the fourth year the tournament had been held in Irvine. The event was sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association and the International Tennis Federation. More than a hundred players from around the United States and Mexico, Australia, Japan and other countries, vied for titles in men's and women's singles and doubles divisions that include open, B's, C's, quadriplegic and juniors. The open divisions divided prize money of $4,000 among the top three places. Winners from all divisions also gained points to help them qualify for the U.S. Open held in San Diego in October. "These players played their hearts out in the sun and heat in Irvine," said tournament director Mikel Bistany. "The weekend was filled with good play."
